The music that I've heard my whole life has influenced me one way or another. I'll hear something and think that I want to make something that sounds like that, or feels like that. I get to a point with almost any style of music where I could tell you something that I like, in any piece, by any artist. I rarely find music that I completely cannot stand, or that I love completely. I can't stand the terms 'better' or 'worse' when it comes to music. Like it's some sort of rateable standard, like i.q. test for songs.
To clarify, some things that have been important; The Spinners "Oooh Child". I heard it, and it grabbed me and would not let go. I asked my Mom what it was, and she told me, and I went searching through dusty old record shops until I found it. Best week's allowance ever spent. I still love it, like the first time I heard it.
"Bizarre Ride 2 the Pharcyde" was the first album I remember buying with my own money. I remember the debate too, between it, and Dr. Dre's "the Chronic". The choice kinda tells alot about the person I was then, and have become; in the sense that I have always stepped away from the 'gangster' side of hip hop.
"Endtroducing" by dj Shadow. This album was so hard to find in my city when it first came out more than 10 years ago. I searched and the best I could do was the '187' ost. Turned out to be my introduction to Shadow, and Massive Attack all at once. I remember listening to this music in that era and wanting to do exactly what they were doing. I couldn't explain it, but I wanted to do it too. I wanted to be a dj, producer, and whatever else it took to have this music fly right through me. Like it was my superpower.
Sounds Like
I'm saying everything I can't normally, and I'm doing it in the most beautiful language that man has ever used. And that language has been long ago forgotten so no one knows exactly what I'm saying unless I explain it. Truly, they get their own ideas, that aren't far off.
It's finished, and ready for listening. Ask about the real thing, the cd, or search online. It's so much fun. Who else makes a biographical mix? Okay lotsa people. This one is mine, so there you go! Check out the quick samples of it, then find the whole fucker.
The Story up Until Now....
I used to rap alot; I made 2 albums, did a few shows, competed in some battles. I grew older; I got a lil' frustrated with the hip hop community, got sick of being threatened, and fronted on. I got sicker still, and eventually hung up the microphone. It's just not for me anymore. I still love the culture, I still love the music from the hey day. I like some of what's happening now, I just cannot bring myself to have any respect for the majority of what I see and hear now. Go ahead and call that shit urban, play it in clubs and I'll stay home and listen to "underground" in my underwear and remember when people used to smile at shows.
I ended up losing patience with alot of people in my life around the same time I lost patience with hip hop. I knew I needed to change some things, and one day my brother suggested; "why don't you try making tracks that don't need words?" and I said; "I was thinking of trying that". It was something that I had wanted to do even before I thought I wanted to be a rapper. The ensuing sessions in that basement on Oxford Street proved to lead to the beginnings of what would end up as "Short Stories, Poems, Urban Legends, and Un-Funny Jokes."
That record ended up taking about a year to complete, and won't ever see a properly funded release. There's a couple of covers, and a bunch of samples that will prevent that from happening. I had a bit of an epiphany one night at a bar. I got drunk, but something I didn't expect was taking place that night. I never would've predicted this, and I was so surprised, that when I woke up the next day I reconsidered a number of things. I was determined to stop partying for atleast three months; all in the name of being productive, of working at this music again.
It's been six months and a few days since I made that decision. Since then I've finished "Short Stories, Poems, Urban Legends, and Un-Funny Jokes." The last two tracks were "As Sad as Your Smile" and "This is Directed at You". I've pieced together a couple of mixtapes, and thrown a couple of parties. I dj every friday, and I love what I'm doing. Now I'm trying to produce a few albums for a few highly talented vocalists. It's really kind of strange, but there's someone who has had a huge impact on this process and probably has no idea. Really there's no way that they would.
At this point, I just want to stay at it. I don't care to get rich, I don't care to look cool. I just want to keep making this music that defines this life I'm living. No matter how strange the story would be, I'd rather tell it in the language of music. There are parts of this tale, that truly, you wouldn't believe me if I told you. Someday if you catch me face to face, on a September afternoon, over coffee, with a nice breeze, maybe a few sparse raindrops; then I'll tell it. To the right person/right people; I'd tell the whole thing if you want me to.
But don't say I didn't warn you....
You wouldn't believe me if I told you. But I hope you do anyways.

I thoroughly enjoyed your blog comment "Canadian boy". I'm not sure what made me write that last night. I wanted to elaborate on the whole idea but it got frustrated with the damn machine. Anyhow, thank you for your comment and time.
