BEATNIK CASTLE: Beauty and the Beast
The lovely, seductive persona of Mad Monk, LTD recording artist Francillia, lead singer of Florida/US Virgin Islands-based hard-edged psychedelic-trippy-hippie high-energy pop-dance outfit Beatnik Castle, is obviously stunning to the naked eye. She dazzles and captivates audiences with a graceful swagger yet exemplifies the quintessential nonchalant tomboy attitude. Not only does she display qualities of poignant musical virtuosity, she’s equally and artistically tenacious and tough. Dedicated yet dazzling. Elegant, stylish and sophisticated yet somber, unorthodox, and pensive, Francillia soulfully expresses her emotional prowess through Beatnik Castle’s high-energy eclectic music. Her sultry, expressive vocals energize and invigorate souls with delicate ease; her poignant presence meticulously captures the essence of creative ingenuity.
Her chic persona is in direct contrast to Beatnik’s other member - producer, arranger and songwriter Quincy B. Scovill. Amazingly, this eclectic blend of unique, polar opposite musicians (Quincy admittedly listens to “The” groups like The Osmonds, The Archies, The Beatles, The Turtles, as well as “heavier” groups such as Demilich, Celtic Frost, and W.A.S.P!) performs incredibly well and efficient. It’s a unique combination of beauty and beast – a virtual collaborative yin and yang that results in effective, sensual pitchblende of diverse musical accolades as evidenced on “Will U B Mine?” Beatnik Castle’s debut CD on Tampa-based independent label Mad Monk, LTD.
Released January 2009, the CD-Maxi-single features remix and re-recordings by such dance world notables as Miami’s Cato K, Lenny B, and, of course, Quincy B. The single is already getting plenty airplay on over 52 dance/mix radio stations across the country, including XM/Sirius and 16 countries in Europe. Since signing with promoter DJ Harry F. Towers of DEET Promotions in March 2009, Francillia and Quincy have been extremely busy - performing at the DEET Showcase at Club Twist at the Winter Music Conference in Miami last month, as well as personal appearances at After Hours clubs, local dance venues, art exhibits, fashion shows, and singing the national anthem for local and national sporting events.
The dynamic duo is off to Miami May 26 at South Beach’s infamous Club Twist to film the video for “Will U B Mine?” radio edits and techno versions, the latter being extremely popular in Europe. Francillia also will be performing later that evening. "Will U B Mine?" in its original version was originally released in 2008 by Scovill Avenue, yet another unrecognized Bay Area gem whose 2008 Mad Monk, LTD CD “Big House” amazingly garnered seven Grammy nods from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Committee last year, including the coveted categories “Record of the Year,” “Album of the Year,” and “Song of the Year”. Incidentally, “Will U B Mine?” in its original version, was in the Grammy category “Dance Single of the Year” as well. In 2007, Mad Monk rockers Peasants of Posture had four different songs nominated in four different categories for the 2008 Grammy Awards. All nominated songs were written, arranged, and produced (and, in some cases, performed) by Mr. Quincy B. himself!
Scovill is quite busy these days, cranking out his unique brand of hard-edge psychedelic hippie trippy metallic hop-pop, including Francillia’s solo CD “Temptation” (which also features a cover of a 1971 Alice Cooper classic!) and Blind Granny’s Euro-techno offering “My Head is Spinning” in 2010! For the second consecutive year, Tampa-based artist Scovill Avenue, fresh of their 2008 release Big House, has been placed on the Official Ballot for the 2009 Grammy Awards by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in seven categories, including the coveted first three categories Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year, respectively.
“It’s definitely an honor to Scovill Avenue and a tribute to the Bay Area,” exclaims Quincy B. Scovill, producer, writer, resident mad man, and owner of Mad Monk, Ltd, a Tampa-based independent label with several artists on its roster. “Last year we did pretty well and I told everybody that this year would be even more special!” Scovill is alluding to last year’s nomination of Mad Monk’s signature act Peasants of Posture, adding that four different songs from POP’s 2007 debut CD CounterRevolution were recognized by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Committee and placed on the Official Ballot for the 2008 Grammy Awards in four different categories. Also joining Scovill in the nominations are local artists Lorna Bracewell, Jun Bustamonte, Rick “Key Low D” Dill, Prostar Recording Studio engineer Jodi Gray, Arthur Steur, Francillia, and singer Jennifer B. Real.
“These folks helped make this happen,” Scovill jubilantly exclaims. “ProStar Recording, Mz. Fortune, Piano Man, Johnny “D.S.” Cash, local rapper Ace of Jays, Adrianne, Berkely Bob, Deb Hunsedder, Jeremy Thomas, Shelter Kidd, Betty Lou Fox, and Francillia…We helped make this happen with a concerted team effort!” Scovill is quick to add that Mad Monk, Ltd is planning to release a CD maxi-single of “Will U B Mine,” nominated for Best Dance Recording, later this year and, under the moniker Beatnik Castle. The single will feature new Mad Monk, LTD artist Francillia, as well as latin, techno, club, acoustic, and Island remixes by Scovill, Key Lo D, DJ Lenny B, and famed Miami DJ Cato K. Francillia’s full-length CD, tentatively titled “Temptation” is scheduled for release Spring 2009. Big House (and CounterRevolution) is still available through CD Baby at http://cdbaby.com/cd/scovillavenue3.
