The Times was purchased by E.J. Lynett in 1895 and under his leadership became one of the country's leading newspapers, a position it still retains. Shortly after Mr. Lynett's death in 1943, his paper, then being published by his three children was awarded a Pulitizer Prize for public service. The Times, now published by E.J.'s grandchildren who took over when their father, Edward J. Lynett, died in 1966, continues on the course he chartered. It is the predominant source for news and insight in Scranton and all of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
The Times operation underwent one of the most radical changes in its history on May 21, 1990 when its century-old rival, The Scrantonian-Tribune, closed. The Scranton Times purchased certain assets of The Scrantonian-Tribune, including the paper's name. That deal signaled the end of the 134-year-old Scrantonian-Tribune and The Times' two-year-old morning paper, The Morning Times, and gave birth to a new Tribune, a morning daily published by The Times. The paper was well-received by the readers in the community, obviously pleased that The Tribune flag remained under the ownership of a local family.
On June 25, 2005, the two papers merged into one morning newspaper, The Times-Tribune.
