Seadar Rose and Aaron Davis—the duo of Screen Door Porch—know the perfect tunes to play on those rusty old swings. They're not old, not modern, but genuine songs propelled by witty storylines and poetic ramblings. The music is reminiscent of Gillian Welch meets The Band, with Wilco and Lucinda Williams hanging out backstage. They are the songs of Screen Door Porch.
Rose (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin) and Davis (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, foot percussion) formed Screen Door Porch in 2007 as an outlet for the folk and grit songs they grew up on in the American South (North Carolina and Kentucky, respectively). This roots music combined with ambient textures, dirty slide guitar, and country-sweet harmonies outline their sound.
Over the last few years, Screen Door Porch has been fortunate to share concert bills with Willie Nelson, Wilco, Bryan Wilson, Yonder Mountain String Band, James McMurtry, Grace Potter, Reckless Kelly, and many other inspiring groups. While not on the road, they split their time between the Teton Mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming and the Live Music Capital of Austin, Texas.
In December 2009, Screen Door Porch entered Ramble Creek Studio in Austin to record their full-length, self-titled debut. Co-produced by Ramble Creek's Britton Beisenherz and Screen Door Porch, the album is set for a March 2010 release.
"The ideas within each song were shaped so much by the experiences that we had in the studio," says Rose. “And I can’t envision a more musical and friendly group of Austin players to work with.”
SDP entered Ramble Creek with a strong foundation of material, which evolved into a tasteful direction that was unimaginable—assembled in just four days. Additional instrumentation includes pedal steel, fiddle, piano and Rhodes, cello, bass and drums.
Davis adds, “We had limited time for each song, and it really played in our favor—less time to think, just do. I was much more relaxed and willing to let the unexpected happen, even playing instruments I didn’t think I would.”
Screen Door Porch will hit the road again in the spring and summer to promote the new disc. Until then, Keep it on the Porch!
