What is Gun Gallery (and started off as Peter Martinez, Guitarface and then Serial Dater) began some five years ago on a bus tour through the Highlands of Scotland. Two guys, about the same age, sparked up a conversation about rock and roll, as the bus shifted from side to side, as vistas of rolling green hills and sheep and highland cattle flew by. They each realized that the other played guitar, and after one purchased an acoustic guitar in downtown Edinburgh for a measily 60 quid (the other already had his Martin along for the journey), a friendship, based on similar world views, cheap liquor and acoustic guitars was formed.
One was at the University of Edinburgh to study Philosophy, the other English, so the tree of knowledge these two climbed was rooted deep. But then they decided to take their axes out and start chopping. They began a tradition of escaping the gray, overcast days of Scotland, by jamming to tunes by Neil Young ("Old Man," "Only Love Will Break Your Heart"), Santana ("Oye Como Va") and a few originals that hadn't yet taken real form. Sometimes a bottle of Southern Comfort accompanied them. Sometimes a few passing women stopped in to applaud and approve. Most of the time, it was the walls that talked.
The year rolled on, and the two ended up scoring high marks on their final exams, but were ultimately separated--one was from California, the other from New York. And so "broke up the band" for nearly five years, though the friendship stuck around. Emails and phone calls were exchanged. Southern Comfort was spilled on curbs.
Then, as Fate would have it, one moved to New York City to become a rock music journalist (he got an unpaid internship at Rolling Stone), and the other moved there to work in music production and computer programming (R.I.P. Leonid). They met up again, and as if no time had passed, their guitars in hand, they picked up where they left off and began to write songs. They were both much better guitarists at this point, and the first song that made the cut was called "Someone Like You" (about looking for the right girl). The band continued with "Que Sera, Sera" (about a girl), "Candy Mountain" (inspired by a Burger King commercial), "Take Me Down" (an opus of ennui and darkness), and "Spent" (a depressing ode to loneliness). Of course, there were also duds like "If You Don't Love Me (I Know I'll Die)" and "We Are All Born (The Same)." The former was written for a girl whom one of the guitarists failed miserably to woo several times; the latter plagued the band in the arranging process, and reminded the members too much of the Stones' "Paint It Black." We've since added the smoldering "Miss 119," about the girls at one of our favorite local haunts; "Red Eye," about flying home and back and thinking shit over; "Bullshitters and Beerdrinkers," written during the Rolling Stone intern days; "Madrid," about losing your shit over an older Spanish woman; and "Andalucia," about losing your shit yet getting the hypothetical Spanish woman. We're even trying to Gun Gallerize a few covers. Maybe even a record deal.
With each new session, the two get better, write better songs, and desire to perform publicly. We've recently started jamming with one Lucas Ives, master skin-beater. He's putting up with our ever-shifting tempos and detunings like a champ. If only we could find a bassist ...
Look out for Gun Gallery in a popular public house in the very near future. Thank you to all that showed up for our first gig at the now-defunct CBGB Gallery. The only other Gallery of consequence.
