Welcome to Paul Darby & the Yirdbards
Having been singing from the heart since the ‘60s, the voice of Paul Darby has matured like fine wine. Already front-man for the ever popular Dubious Brothers, with the Yirdbards this is Darby at his most soulful. The songs, many of which have been written by close friends, have a strong spiritual power, often drawing on man’s potent relationship with nature, landscape and society.
Having crossed paths with Pat Randall (guitar, backing vocals) and Verity Sharp (cello, fiddle) in rural Wiltshire, the music of Paul Darby and Yirdbards is now set to deliver a deep sigh of satisfaction.
What the punters say: ‘utterly lovely’ ; ‘…shades of Incredible String Band co-mingled with Billy Bragg via Attila the Stockbroker…’
Meaning: Yird Earth, Bard A poet.

The songs have a strong spiritual power, often drawing on man's potent relationship with nature, the earth and society. Many of the songs are written by local writers and close friends including Mike Scott and Peter Please, but others, such as Riversong and I Am The Land, are by the Lake District songsmith Paul Metsers who delves deep into the question of what it is to be human.

The Yirdbards lead singer Paul Darby first came to prominence in the early '70s as one half of the duo Windfall, and over the ensuing years he used his musical talent to raise thousands of pounds for Greenpeace. In the '80s he became frontman for the R&B band the Dubious Brothers, but has more recently returned to his love of acoustic music. 'I sing' he says, 'because it gives me pleasure. With the Yirdbards' line up of cello and acoustic guitars, there's more space for intimacy and subtlety. It's more intricate. I just hope that people will be moved by our music in some way'.

The music of the Yirdbards strives to reconnect us with the land and remind us that, as its stewards, we have a collective responsibility for its safe keeping. -

"Thanx for adding to the rich tapestry that is the Sunray Folk Club.
I have had many comments and they all sound like "one of the best evenings at the club".
