Francisco Medavog’s entrance into the art world began at the early age of 14 when he used his father’s 1960’s Kodak to take black and white pictures of family and friends. He developed an eye for shooting poses and facial expressions that would later be used as references in his fashion illustrations. At this same early age, Francisco became an avid collector of couture clothing. He originally collected to study the construction of the garments. This self education lead to enrollment in FIDM for formal studies in fashion design and illustration. After completing two years of studies, Medavog traveled through England and Spain where he began photographing gothic and medieval buildings.. This combination of fashion and architecture was apparent in his fashion design and is often shown integrated in his art. In recent years Medavog has taken those early learned drawing skills and applied them to new inspirations…life, nature and an intense awareness of his surroundings. His photography and digitally enhanced art lead to an interest in pen and ink, water colors and growing interest in working with oil paints. Francisco says his paintings are inspired by self expression as in the works of Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo and Egon Schiele…artists whose lives were cut short and became famous after their deaths. He lives by one motto in every aspect of life, design and art “know your past, build your future”.
