April 11 – April 17
Zuisho-ji Darumadou Gallery

Within a decaying urban landscape, vending machines, street lamps, electric poles and meters stand as sentinels among the dwellings where people once lived. Because of unabated consumption the skeletal remains of human production are all that linger in the half-light. The only remaining inhabitants are the fertile mounds of soil in which medicinal herbs have germinated. These healing plants have returned to restore health to an ailing world.

Employing techniques he developed over the last 10 years, American-born artist Scott Silvey creates richly textured paintings of acrylic and carbon on panel. The images of residential architecture in the works are found in Setagaya-ku, the Tokyo district in which he lives. The herbs populating the paintings are culled from antique texts and other sources found online.

This exhibition presents a continuation of the themes that Silvey has explored throughout his career in both painting and installation. The relationships between human construction and natural systems are at the forefront of his examination.

Scott Silvey’s work has been exhibited in both group and solo exhibitions in the United States and abroad. He has earned numerous honors including the 2000 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center. His work has also appeared in publications such as Sculpture, Art Papers, and Antennae.

Hey hombre,

you must be an honest man by now. Enjoy your time away! Got some sweet digs on a whole new umbrella of Japanese music that doesn't lame when you get back.

Congrats again,

I've been getting ready for our move and was packing stuff the other day when I came across old camp pictures. It was so funny to see them and think we could have ever been those silly little kids. I'll have to get them scanned after we move and email them to you.
There is a great one of Kevin and several others of you diving that I'm sure you'll enjoy seeing!

I just was looking through your pics cause I like to look at your art every now and then. I think it's time you bring your talent states-side, say, to Portland. I think Portland would receive you well.
How are you?

Congrats Silvey San. Just noticed now with the pictures that you and Miho were all official like as opposed to the 'living in sin' which I suspected was going on right under my nose. And you a former altar boy and all.
Not long till the 13th now. Looking forward to it.

That sounds very devout. I like it. Goldie Rose was with me this year, so nothing rowdy.

I'm teaching a class on the Anthropology of Food this semester. I wish we could sit around and talk about it.

What's this about you being a voodoo priest? You're so multi-talented. How much would you charge per hour for your services and can you work long distance or do we have to come to Japan again?
