THE SEVEN SISTERS
The Pleiades also known as M45 or the Seven Sisters, is an open cluster in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest star clusters, and is probably the best known, and is certainly the most obvious to the naked eye. The cluster is dominated by hot blue stars which have formed within the last 100 million years. Astronomers estimate that the cluster will survive for about another 250 million years, after which it will have dispersed due to gravitational interactions with its galactic neighborhood.
The Pleiades are, according to Greek mythology, the seven daughters of Atlas, the titan who holds up the sky, and the Oceanid named Pleione. The Great Hunter, Orion, fell in love with them and chased them for seven years. Enamoured with the young women he pursued them over the face of the Earth. In pity for their plight, Zeus changed them into a flock of doves, which he set in the heavens.
