Seal Press's Blurbs |
About me:
Seal Press was founded in 1976 to provide a forum for women writers and feminist issues. Since then, Seal has published groundbreaking books that represent the diverse voices and interests of women—their lives, literature, and concerns. Fueled by the radical thinking and daring work of our authors, Seal’s list includes books on women's health, parenting, outdoor adventure and travel, popular culture, gender and women's studies, and current affairs. Among our many notable authors are Ariel Gore, Ayun Halliday, Inga Muscio, Barbara Sjoholm, Michelle Tea, Daphne Gottlieb, and Jessica Valenti.
Seal was launched with a single volume of poetry, printed by hand and distributed to bookstores in the Pacific Northwest. Several years later, the company published Getting Free, a handbook for battered women that had been turned down by every major New York publisher. The book was an overnight success, and what began as a small press started its evolution into what Seal is today—a thriving publishing imprint with a wide-ranging editorial program both distinguished and provocative. Along the way we’ve scored some firsts and broken a few barriers, publishing the first book on African American women’s health, critical guidebooks on lesbian relationships and parenting, key texts of the third wave feminist movement, and inspiring tales of women’s travels throughout the world. Our books engender thought, rage, laughter, tears, and deep connections among women from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Seal Press is a member of the Perseus Books Group, and is based in Berkeley, CA.
