Documentary (work-in-progress) is a behind the
scenes look at Katherine Dunham's 1992 47-day hunger strike opposing
Pres. George H.W. Bush's controversial policy on Haitian Refugees (fleeing terror).
Haiti's 1st democratically elected President (Jean Bertrand Aristide) was overthrown in an illegal coup which left hundreds dead and a new democracy
in turmoil. Aristide (arrested and exiled),
was not Miss Dunham's choice for President.
Her position, however, was that
he was elected by the people and if he had done
anything wrong, he should have been impeached--
not overthrown. President Bush's policy seemed
not to support Haiti's new democracy, but rather
its enemies. Hundreds of "boat people" died and
thousands were picked up at sea and forcibly returned.
Many celebrities and public figures came to support her hunger fast. By the time it ended Jesse Jackson and President Aristide had come to her bedside to beg her to stop her protest.
