Sean's Interests
|
| General | Flying, writing music, playing music, gourmet cooking, haute cuisine, wine, tennis, golf, dancing, reading, sailing, traveling and many others I can't think of. One of my peculiarities is the fact that I obsess about my hobbies. I want to achieve perfection and the highest level of performance in everything I do. I just don't believe that I can't do it. Every now and then though reality slaps in the face and invariably when I put less pressure on myself I tend to get better (and tend to enjoy it more - amazing how that works). I'll let you know how that goes . . :) Also I love sites like wikipedia and could spend hours on it. As I talked about above, I'm fascinated with cosmology, relativity and some of the latest thoughts in string theory. I am a geek and enjoy computers and technology. Check out my latest two companies at www.filebanc.com and www.homespoke.com for example. I used to be a code junkie but I think I lack lot of the patience to do it much any more in my old age. ;) I love philosophy and anthropology (certain politicians would behoove themselves to dabble in it a little too so we're not constantly making the same mistakes over and over again).
| | Music | I mostly listen to classical music but I also have a very special place in my heart for acid jazz, deep house, techo and trance. I know it's a weird combo, but that shouldn't surprise you by now. :) I also like talented musicians regardless of genre. I enjoy Dido and David Gray for example. Also enjoy Dave Matthews (I've been stopped on the street a few times to ask if I know I look like Dave - "yes, I get that a lot") and have been to a few of his concerts lately and the first cruise to the Bahamas with Dave and friends. And as mentioned before, I took classical piano including jazz and music theory for the better part of 15 years as a youngster. I still compose and play a lot of solo piano as well as jazz and electronica instrumentals. One of my goals is to get back to the level of proficiency I had when I was younger and could actually play Chopin's Polonaise Opus 53 . . . :)
| | Movies | Sideways! Borat. I am a sucker for indie and foreign films, though I like a big, kickass action blockbuster like the next person I suppose. I also like intelligent documentaries. I love to laugh at silly comedies (e.g., Something About Mary, American Pie) and have even been known to like a chick flick from time to time. Go figure . . .
| | Television | Since there is not a "Radio" heading here, I would have to add my own listing. I am a certified NPR junkie and enjoy All Things Considered, Marketplace, Prairie Home Companion, This American Life, Car Talk, Wait Wait Don't Tell me and other shows I listen to on my local public radio station KUHF 88.7FM. I also listen to Pacifica radio and other programs available via streaming audio online. I do not watch much television at all; I think it's the biggest brain drain and time suck man ever invented. Though I do enjoy a good laugh at the simpsons, family guy and south park. I think Ali G is absolutely hysterical. I also am a geek so I like the SciFi channel (star trek, battlestar galactica). Oh yeah I'm a foodtv junkie and like watching Iron Chef, Alton Brown, Giada de Laurentiis, Bobby Flay (Mesa Grill in NY is awesome!!) . . . mmm maybe I watch more than I'm willing to admit! Tivo it baby!
| | Books | Everything - you name it! I'm methodically working my way through the Library of Congress . . . j/k. I like history books and theoretical books on subjects of interest. I also like the occasional novel (e.g., Tim Robbins) and am a big fan of David Sedaris.

About me:
I am a paradox for sure - a precise product of my left brained father and right brained mother who both had a significant influence on me growing up. I am somewhat of an obsessive-compulsive perfectionist (especially in my hobbies) and a renaissance man rolled into one. My mother wanted me to be a concert pianist (thanks mom!) and my father a scientist. Thus I'm equally comfortable discussing quantum mechanics and special relativity as I am writing and arranging music, playing a concerto or cooking a gourmet 6 course meal for 10. I suppose I want to do just about everything in my life at some point. I think I have a pretty good track record so far! I was fortunate enough to travel extensively around the world growing up with my family and that is I think one of the biggest components that shaped me. I have a few pet peeves but poor grammar and spelling have got to be towards the top of the list . . . ;) I could be accused of being a little too "big picture" and sometimes get analysis paralysis and need to focus to get things done (though I think thinking about them is more fun :)). I could also be accused of procrastinating though I'm working on that. As far as food is concerned, I love all of it. Sushi and Thai are a couple of my favorites and I love a greasy cheeseburger like the next person I suppose. My favorite cocktail is grey goose with a lemon twist (quickly becoming a lost art in bars these days). My favorite beers are Dogfish Head 90 and 60 minute IPAs, Sam Smith's Winter Welcome, Belgium Brewery's 1554 and a few others. I am definitely a red wine drinker, enjoying big, spicy fruit-forward varietals like Cabernets and Zinfandels. I especially like to find great wines under $20 like Ring Bolt and Seghesio though I love Ridge which is around $40. I enjoy an occasional cigar as well. My friends and I do a thing called Margarita Friday which was a tradition that started almost 10 years ago when I lived at the Rice Lofts downtown (9th floor baby!) where we all meet up and have margaritas no matter where we happen to be - it's open invitation so send me a message if you want to join in! All in all, however, I'm extremely easy going (honest! though all my rambling above may lead you to believe otherwise) and can get along with just about anyone. Though I'm very demanding of myself, I am maintenance free for others . . . ;)

Who I'd like to meet:
I've always wondered if this question is general in nature or if it is relevant only within the context of myspace. I'll assume the latter. My general rule is to add people I actually know and not to have 674 million friends or whatever. I'm also willing to add people that are one degree of separation from my real friends if they sound interesting with the intent of becoming real friends. Exceptions include musical artists and other similar people or businesses but once again I either frequent the establishment or listen to their music. I was reluctant to ever create a profile on myspace but it has been very helpful in reconnecting to lost friends and meeting new ones. My intent here is to expand my social circle and meet people that enjoy the same sort of things I do and to also find new interests (though I need another hobby like a hole in the head).
