Those were the infamous lines from Kurtis Blow in 1980 during its early years. One of Hip-Hop's greatest attributes is the music and these are some of the artists who's talents were borrowed and became Hip-Hop soundscapes. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Breaks are important to Hip-Hop because it is used from older records. Many of the recordings that came out during the 1950's, '60's and '70's were not digitized and relied heavily on skilled musicians and vocalists who were armed with audio tape and the skill to bring instruments alive and depending on their own compositions. This is the generation for the actual real talent and Hip-Hop was very aware of this. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hip-Hop was also not prejudiced when it came to sampling selections. All types of music were put in producers SP-12's or MPC 60's to create a new sound taken from yesteryear. Many are not aware of exactly who's music that they are listening to, so this is dedicated to them and to their contributions to Hip-Hop, directly or indirectly. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- During these times, everyone from all generations and ages listened to the same music and it was not divided like it is today. Mama appreciated Michael Jackson as well as I did back in the days and I liked to hear The Dramatics, Stylistics and The Delfonics, which was her music. These times were more simpler because everyone could get together and like and appreciate the same things. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jazz and funk are Hip-Hop's favorite beats, with James Brown, George Clinton and Kool & The Gang leading the pack as Hip-Hop's most sampled artists. They were the one's who put the funk in Hip-Hop with a catalog of different records. You actually might have heard the same groove on something different and that is because these particular artists is who Hip-Hop was searching for when they were diggin' in the crates. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The breakbeat is the backbone of a Hip-Hop sample. To the producer, it's all about the drums. Beats such as Impeach The President, Sing A Simple Song, Funky Drummer and President, Hihache, Skull Snaps It's A New Day, Ashley's Roachclip, Synthetic Substitution and The Five Stairsteps Don't Change Your Love are based on the drum itself. These beats made Hip-Hop not only what it became, but what it is now. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Expedition and recognition is what this is all about. Many of these tracks would have been unheard of if no one took the time to discover these hidden gems. They are not hidden anymore and is as legendary as Hip-Hop is itself.
Influences	----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I believe that I had the best of both worlds because I had a chance to witness firsthand some of Hip-Hop's predecessors. Growing up in the 1970's and hearing a collage of music opened me up to experience using some of these tracks once Hip-Hop evolved into using breaks. This is part of the reason why the soundscapes weren't limited. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some complain that using old breakbeats have destroyed music and that it is not creative. I disagree. To use a portion of a different record and make it sound unlike its original is creativity right there and it pays homage to the original artist. Many older artists would have died out if it wasn't for Hip-Hop reviving their careers. That is just something to think about. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LIVIN' IN THE WORLD OF HIP-HOP On a November evening in 1979, I witnessed a brand new sound while I listened to the radio. There was continuous "talking" over the music and what I thought was WVKO DJ Kirk Bishop was no other than Fatback's King Tim III. A few days later, I heard another song that had similar "talking" over the music and that turned out to be SugarHill Gang's Rappers Delight. Once I heard them, I was hooked and since then, I never turned my back on it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More of these songs continued to follow, including Kurtis Blow's Christmas Rappin', The Sequence's Funk You Up and Spoonie Gee's Spoonin' Rap and then I thought to myself, maybe I could do this too. I would soon find out that it wasn't my calling, but I could hear how it was evolving and finding its place on the scene. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- R&B acts began to follow as well. Fatback, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Lakeside, The Bar-Kays, Blondie, Teena Marie and Stevie Wonder would but rhymes in their songs. From here, I could see how this new rap music was becoming a major influence. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In 1983, the arrival of Run-DMC had changed the soundscape and the vision of Hip-Hop. Between 1983 and '85 was an awkward moment in Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop was struggling to find its true sound and at the same time, trying not to become a passing fad, as many older people would write it off as. I believed in this culture and promised myself that I would be a part of it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By the time the Golden Age era hit in 1986, I was already a DJ with my own radio show. This is when I began to see the true creativity of Hip-Hop and I became even more immersed within it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1988 became Hip-Hop's pinnacle year. There was so much talent coming out of the woodworks, it was hard keeping up. I can recall how broke I was due to all the records that I was buying. Just about every week, something new would hit the streets and my mixtapes sounded different every time. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1990's Hip-Hop was the greatest. Creativity was at an all-time high and just about everyone had a different style. Besides that, Hip-Hop was becoming major, so it seemed that everyone could get a piece of the pie and eat good. These are the times that I miss the most. Finally, we have to get back to how we all fell in love with Hip-Hop in the first place. Once the love is back in it, then we'll hear the love come out of it. Hip-Hop holds a special place in my heart, so this is why I am sharing some of Hip-Hop's Greatest Moments with you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WELCOME TO IN FULL CHILL - MY PERSONAL FAVORITE SLOW JAMS Growing up, radio had a big influence on me and I wanted to be a part of that. It happened at age eighteen and I felt like I was on top of the world. People listening to me on the radio was a high that I could never come down from. A part of growing up and listening to the radio was to hear Quiet Storm shows because they were all ballad driven. Local legendary shows such as the late Kirk Bishop's Blue Monday was Quiet Storm favorites in the '70's and '80's on WVKO radio. This would be a style that I would embrace and incorporate myself. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Slow jams have always had a personal affect on me. It is easy to remember what song was on during a significant time in life, whether it's good or bad. It is also easy to remember people in your love life and situations that happened and what was on or around then. Memories keep a special person alive with you. They still may be there or not, but will live within you through song. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I began doing a Quiet Storm show named In Full Chill at CTNT radio in Columbus, OH in 1986. My show aired from 3 to 5 in the morning, weekday late nights. On this show, I provided cutting edge, experimental slow jams to the most heavily rotated songs of the era. From that, I developed a style of playing slow jams. I knew that it wasn't what you played, but how you played them. I concentrated on tempos, themes, how a song began or end, anything that kept the vibe alive and kept your attention to the radio while I was on. Many of these songs are those special moments hosting In Full Chill. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Slow music somehow motivates me. I can put on slow music and clean the house and be focused or I can work with it on. It keeps me in a serene state of mind and enhances my concentration. This is another reason why even after radio, I had to continue my IN FULL CHILL series on cassette and CD. Providing excellent slow jam mixes is legendary with me and I have gotten a rep from it. Slow jams mean as much to me as it does to you, so for all those that love a great slow jam, this is dedicated to you.
Sounds Like	JAMES BROWN MUSICAL TRIBUTE THE GODFATHER OF SOUL - JAMES BROWN (May 3, 1933 - December 25, 2006) Waking up on Christmas Day 2006, I was shocked to hear about the death of the legendary Godfather of Soul, James Brown. This nearly ruined my whole day, but I can say that James lived a full life up until the age of 73. James Brown’s music and persona influenced not only his contemporary generation, but a whole new generation who wouldn’t have known too much about him if it wasn’t for the DJ’s and producers who incorporated his music from the days of yesterday into music of the late 1980’s and ‘90’s. At one time, James Brown’s music could be heard on nearly every Hip-Hop track. His band, as funky as they wanted to be, were a disciplined group spearheaded by the Godfather himself. This segment that I appropriately title, Do The James is a dedication to him by listing many of the songs that used his music. It is impossible to list a complete compilation because I do not know every song that came out or every song that included a James Brown soundbite, but this listing is interesting itself. Hip-Hop owes a lot to the Godfather, everything from acknowledgement to a royalty check. The world, for the most part, was introduced to James Brown in 1956 with the hit single Please, Please, Please and his career skyrocketed with consistent hits for the next twenty years. After 1980’s half-hearted Rapp Payback, James’s consistentcy took a backslide. It was during this time disco was in and James Brown was following a trend instead of leading one. After a few years off the radar, his career was resurrected, thanks to Eddie Murphy’s hilarious rendition of him on his 1983 Delirious stand up and suddenly, he was in demand again and this time to a brand new generation. Hip-Hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa got James to do a duet on his 1984 Unity. The sampling began on Tyrone Brunson’s 1984 remix to Fresh when his Say It Loud (I’m Black And I’m Proud) was cut up on the wheels of steel. The Fat Boys took it to another level on their remake of Sex Machine in 1986 and that’s when Hip-Hop incorporated James Brown’s vocal snippets and infectuous grooves into their own recordings, setting off Hip-Hop’s Golden Age era. I wanted to post this on the day of James Brown’s death, but I knew that this would be an impossible feat because it takes time and thought to do something like this. So to my best knowledge, this is Hip-Hop’s dedication to the Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown because if it wasn’t for his beats of yesteryear, Hip-Hop wouldn’t have the soundscapes that made them legendary. Sean Banks is my name and I am a DJ by profession and hobby. My first experience came around the age of 3 or 4. I had a Fisher Price record player and would go outside after grabbing a stack of my Mama's 45's and play records while my neighbors would roller skate on our blacktop driveway. I would listen to the radio and pick up the styles of all the WVKO disc jocks from Les Brown, Kirk Bishop, Mel Griffin, Mike Reeves, Frank Kelly, Andrea Bailey, K.C. Jones and more, but I wanted to be more than a personality.

This happened in 1980 when I witnessed Grandmaster Flash mixing with three turntables and two mixers and soon after, I found my calling. I actually began in 1984 after hearing a DJ named Casual Kevin who did mixes on CTNT, a cable radio station in Columbus, OH and I wanted to be just like him. I made contacts with Frank Kelly, the stations co-owner and Ron Bryant, who was the Program Director, but nothing happened until Sunday, June 22, 1986, my first radio show which I did from Midnight til 5 AM, my favorite shift.

CTNT closed its doors in 1987 and I was out of a radio gig and that's when I found side work from deejaying clubs like the Macon, Gene's Place, Seville's, Triad and Club Aces or parties, wedding receptions and stuff like that with my DJ potnas, DJ Icy J and DJ Club Dragon aka K Shiek. I still didn't have the gratification that I had with doing radio. In 1990, I began broadcasting school to further my career in radio and on Saturday, January 12, 1991, I had gotten a position at WCKX 106.3 in Columbus, OH. After that, I had gotten some noteriety in my city until the powers-that-be outsted me from my position, but I still found work regardless.

By 1993, I found a spot that suited my needs and that was Groove Shack Record Store, located in the Short North in Columbus. Groove Shack specialized in the sale of vinyl and hosted Open Mic sessions along with DJ competitions, in which I both hosted to expose more of the city's talent. My goal was to get other people famous because I didn't want to be in the public eye as much. I was satisfied with just doing my music and being to myself.

On Saturday, October 22, 1994. I had began a mixshow that I always wanted to do on the radio at WKCO in nearby Gambier, OH at Kenyon College. This is where I actually got to play a lot of Underground Hip-Hop without people complaining that they had never heard of it before. This show would last for nearly a year until I returned to Columbus.

My last gig was at Club Aces in 1996. My audition was on Wednesday, April 10, 1996 and I brought just 6 crates with me, which was usually a low amount. I did an Old School mix by mixing Change's Change Of Heart with Cheryl Lynn's Encore and a patron was jumping up and down and screaming to the manager,"Get him, get him". Club Aces was 30 and over, so I had to be cautious of what Hip-Hop I played, so I began mixing hardcore instrumentals with R&B vocals to stay real with what I was doing without offending anyone. Some of my most memorable mixes were Real Live's Real Live Shit instrumental with After 7's Can't Stop or Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s Players Anthem with Brandy's I Wanna Be Down or Little Indian's One Little Indian (Buckwild Remix instr.) with TLC's Diggin' On You. Soon after, more Hip-Hop was allowed and I got to play stuff like Large Professor's I Just Wanna Chill, Lord Finesse's Gameplan and even Mobb Deep's Trife Life. I felt that I arrived when this happpened, but certain situations put me out of the game. I began working on a book based on many recordings that I either grew up on or played during the course of my DJ career and it's a project that I am still working on. You know the saying, "Good things come to those that wait?" . This is what happened on March 27, 2006 when I hooked up with DJ Drastic. I became a member of The ReVIBElists. After witnessing DJ Drastic and DJ Self together, I was reminded of what me and DJ Phazo did back in '92 with two DJ's and four turntables. I loved what I witnessed and I felt that I belonged to something after many years. Patience is definetly a virtue.

ABOUT THE REVIBELISTS:

I've known DJ Drastic since 1993 when he was a teenager checking out us older cats at Groove Shack Record Store. We developed a friendship then so when I bumped into him again in 2006, it was a no-brainer for him to invite me to his gig at Bernie's. That's when I met DJ Self and we developed a friendship as well after I performed on the wheels and as a MC (not a rapper, but Master Of Ceremonies, like an announcer for those that don't know).

The ReVIBElists aren't your average DJ's because what separates us from others is that we are two DJ's spinning on four turntables, not separately, but together like we are one. Remember the saying in the movie Drumline?: "One band, one sound" . That is who we are. We also do not focus on playing songs, but creating a sound through instrumentals, breakbeats and turntablism, which both DJ Self and DJ Drastic are well versed in. When I am mixing either alongside Drastic or Self, I put an Old-School Hip-Hop vibe to them. When I am announcing, I give the ReVIBElists a voice and presence. We are unlike anything that has been heard before and I believe that a city like Columbus, OH will never be ready for us. I say this because of how Columbus had always been, closed minded and unwilling to accept anything that is different from the norm. What suprises me is that we have a following around the Short North/Campus area that will attend any gig that we play and I am grateful for them, but I would like to branch out and do what we do anywhere without the questions of "What is that?" or "I don't know what this is" and things in that nature. Our focus is to revibe and our slogan is "Taking it back and keepin' it movin'" That is who we are.
