SOUTH BAY HIP-HOP ARTISTS STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD, REFLECTING OUR AREA'S DIVERSITY

* Who is your favorite South Bay hip-hop artist?
South Bay hip-hop has a sound found nowhere else.
While much of the Top 40 chart (and even the underground) drowns itself in boilerplate hip-hop, rarely varying from the lyrical content and loop of the moment, the "Silicon Valley Sound" has evolved in another direction.
New lyrical styles, off-the-wall beats and crisp topics collide in the Silicon Valley Sound. Many inside and outside the industry are betting that the vast ethnic diversity of hip-hop artists in the South Bay is one of the driving forces behind this phenomenon.
Hip-hop on the East Coast and down South remains a predominantly African-American art form, and Latino influences rappers in the Florida area and the Big Apple. However, San Jose and the surrounding area boast a wealth of rappers of various ethnicities and backgrounds, including Asian-American, Indo-American, African-America, Jewish and white.
Why does San Jose have an ethnic collage of rappers? Local MC Sean Blak says the answer is obvious. "It's because San Jose has such a wide diversity of people."
MC Jack Kim, who goes by the name Stone Face Odious, gives another reason. "It's because Silicon Valley is where all the money is."
In addition to the diverse ethnic makeup of South Bay MCs, the local part of the Hip-Hop Nation is adding a variety of genres to its canvas. The group Rise of the Revolution, which includes Jewish and Asian-American members, blends late '90s style hip-hop with Rage Against the

Machine ethos and Bob Marley-style choruses.
And Blak has Zion I, a hip-hop duo from Oakland, dropping some verses on his next album. Zion I - which pronounces its name "Zion Eye" - is known for using a mix of live instrumentation and samples.
Almighty Aziz, who is part Korean-American and part African-American, takes modern club banger beats and mixes in . . . well, no one is really sure what he mixes in or where it came from, but it sure is different.
Of course, there's always the danger of hip-hop scattering across all musical boundaries to the point where it loses a specific identity, much like rock 'n' roll. Many MCs say this has already happened - just look at iTunes' top downloads: Flo-Rida, who is atop the crunk scene; T-Pain and Sean Kingston, who blend club hip-hop with R&B; and Timbaland, who is a commercial hip-hop producer. They have been regulars on the Top 10 hip-hop download list for the past six months.
Since South Bay hip-hop borrows from many cultures, could it be damaged by other art forms borrowing from it? Blak doesn't think so.
"Look at all the rock bands with turntables on the stage, already. You can't hurt hip-hop. Hip-hop will only get stronger and stronger.
