| About Sean Brady |
|
"I was not born in Ireland but Ireland was born in me".
I was born in Wimbledon, many full moons ago.
My Dad was from Adare in County Limerick, my Mum is from South London with family background in both London & Dublin.
I was brought up in Battersea, South London and always think of that place as where I come from.
I bonded with my Irish background before I can remember and was instantly intoxicated with the mesmerising cocktail of history, legends, heroes & songs.
I loved to sing as a boy and my record collection was an eclectic mix of Irish ballads, rebel songs, country & Irish and American country.
My influences were mainly stuff by The Dubliners, Wolfetones, Hank Williams, Big Tom, Hank Locklin, Hank Snow, Jim Reeves and any big ballady type stuff that was in the charts of the time.
I have been a fervent reader of modern Irish history since childhood and spent many hours sitting with my late Grandad in Adare listening avidly to his vivid recollections of the troubled times in Ireland from 1914 onwards, it made a searing and lasting impression upon me.
I started playing in an Irish band on the London-Irish circuit when I was 18, my guitar playing was appalling (some would say it still is!) but I knew tons of the Irish ballads and Country songs so was able to bluff my way through.
I loved the buzz from it all and have been doing it ever since.
I started writing songs in earnest around 1980 and was lucky enough to have a string of major and some not so major underground hits from 1983 right through to the early 1990s.
Since then I have released lots of singles and albums and had many varying versions of my songs covered by lots of acts including; The Fureys, Foster & Allen, Susan McCann, Mick Hucknall and several other lesser known artistes.
I am lucky to have been brought up in London which for many years enjoyed having the worlds largest Irish born population in the world outside of Ireland, in decline now but its been a great experience to feel a part of the London Irish community and that's really what I consider myself to be, a London Irishman.
