SEAN COFFIN BIO
"…What's very obvious is that Sean Coffin sounds very comfortable in his own skin these days, and whatever he brought back from the US in his passion for that distinct East Coast US sound, he's now expressing his own musical voice".
(Michael Smith, Drum Media - Aug 2006)
COFFIN BROTHERS - LIVING IN APOCALYPTIC TIMES (RELEASED AUGUST 2009) - KRISHANDTALI RECORDS (independent label)
Sean Coffin - tenor saxophone
Greg Coffin - Piano
Simon Barker - Drums
Brett Hirst - Acoustic Bass
"This combination has been around for quite a few years now and there is an instinctive quality to the way they combine with each other. Sean Coffin is,naturally enough, the dominant voice in the band. Not surprisingly, given the amount of time he has spent studying and working in the States he has an approach (and proficiency) that would not be out of place in a 'typical' New York blowing session". Adrian Jackson (Rhythms, Sept 2009)
"....a bruising quality to Sean Coffin's tenor saxophone.....The fascinating This Much has the saxophone at its most compelling, with a fragility now co-habiting alongside the usual muscular, keening sound....." John Shand (SMH August 2009)
"The quartet is as integrated as a computer chip throughout these mostly up-tempo originals with Sean's edgy tenor driving the excitement....." John McBeath (The Australian August 2009)
COFFIN BROTHERS LIVE CD
Newmarket Music - Distributor. Cat .. NEW3222.2
Sean Coffin - tenor saxophone
Greg Coffin - Piano
Simon Barker - Drums
Brett Hirst - Acoustic Bass
".. sophisticated collection of contemporary jazz delivered with an assurance and imaginative flair that speaks of an inate sensibilty and understanding within the quartet....What's very obvious is that Sean Coffin sounds very comfortable in his own skin these days, and whatever he brought back from the US in his passion for that distinct East Coast US sound, he's now expressing his own musical voice". Michael Smith, Drum Media - August, 2006
"The blood of this music is not so much energy (although it assuredly has form of that) as the inter-relationship of sounds...nor is it relaxed, so much as brooding; simmering via slow and mid-tempo's towards sudden, short lived explosions of intensity...Just as a hypnotist requires co-operation from a subject, this music needs commitment from the listener for the spell to fully work."
John Shand - Sydney Morning Herald, August, 2006
