   About Sean Frenette

----------------"Theme and Variations on the Big Bang"------------------

I love feeling like I'm just an agent of an inherently musical Universe. Therefore I'll play any instrument I can find or even create an instrument if I feel moved. I aim to remain open to the whole universe of possible sounds in order to be open to the whole realm of possible expression, of possibility itself. For many of the same reasons I'm also interested in dance, art, theater, writing, yoga, philosophy, science, and spirituality.

I have lately found myself playing unique and original music on classical and acoustic guitars, on my own 3string guitar invention, and on the rare electric-classical guitar made by an extraordinary artist and dear friend, Carla Kelly. The music that comes through me is a tapestry woven of the sounds that move me and the various life experiences that inspire me to create. I also sing and find myself playing various music by other folks and from many different styles. Lately I've taken a shine to folk, Indian classical, and modern solo guitar as well as European classical and American roots, jazz, and rock. I love dancing and working with dancers.

I'm grateful that I've had the opportunity to perform in many wonderful places with many beautiful people. Yes, I've performed twice in Carnegie Hall- once with musical pioneers Edgar Meyer and Mike Marshall in 2006 and then again this April with master Indian musician, Zakir Hussain. But I've also busked on the streets of Nashville, TN with the old blues gurus "Thunder" and "Boot Root"; explored many beautiful dance spaces in the Boston area with Moment Quartet; resonated in New England Conservatory's concert halls both as a student and at NEC's annual Guitarfest; and toured in clubs, colleges, and festivals up and down the East Coast with the award-winning 11-piece Afrobeat ensemble, The Superpowers. Whether it's Carnegie, a street corner, a mountaintop, or the grocery store- I love playing music anywhere.

In the summer of 2008 I traveled cross-country in a vegetable oil-powered Mercedes Benz that was acquired and fixed with the help of the Boston-based Green Grease Monkeys. I've landed for the time being in Portland, OR where I'm burgeoning a new chapter in life and art.

Have been thinking about you, on and off, all day.
Then I saw the light on the answering machine blinking.
You had called me.

dude, grit and grace has so much depth... every time I hear it I attach myself to different sections... and now after mapping the piece it's as though I can't pick it anymore... I guess I'm just attached to the whole thing :)

Hey Sean!

Nice to hear from you. I gave the big lug your birthday wishes. We know how hectic things have been, so no worries. Don't work to hard, take some much deserved time for yourself to rest your mind, body, and soul. Hugs from us both, and we'll talk soon!

Hey man!!! Greetings from Philly!!! I am surprised and happy to hear that you like those songs, Unconditional was a very important song for me... and it was actually the song that was the transitioning stage from "let's see how many colors I can make on this guitar" to "let's see how much I can sing."

I almost kinda want to redo the record at some point, you know... get a good producer, use my martin instead of the rainsong, you know... do it up real nice

And you'll be happy to know that I'm almost finished with my magnum opus "Modern Fingerstyle Guitar" which basically covers all kinds of techniques and contains little "etudes" for every technique. I am also close to completing the Unconditional transcription book, both of which are yours free of charge any night of the freakin week :)

What a wonderful moment I had last night, walking by someone who saw me after a short set on South street here in philly... who mentioned "A very talented girl from Tampa is playing around the corner." One of the best surprises of this year, that's for sure!!!

In the event you want to kinda hammer out some of this stuff for fun, here's the tunings for the record.
1. Pretentious - CGDGBbE
2. Vitamin C - CGDGBE (Also Rather Walk With You, The Jam)
3. You Have My Heart - EADGBE (Also a lot of songs by a lot of people ;) )
4. Catching Up - DADGAD
5. White Folk, They... - DGDGBE (Also Journey to Kyoto)
6. Beautiful Sadness - DADGBE
7. Unconditional - BF#C#G#BE
8. Aurora - C#F#C#G#BE
9. Double-Edged Sword - DADGBE
10. Beatin' Tha Gutz - DADGBE
11. Nothing Like - DGCGCD
12. Clair De Lune - EADGBE / DADGBE
13. Michael Beautiful - CGDEBE (Also Nebula, Polygons)

I'm looking forward to doing some real stuff back over there... I get in town on the 1st of June, but I think I'm going to LA shortly after until July... we'll see! But I have some pretty neat ideas that I'd like to bounce off of ya

Hey man!!!! Well, you won't want to hear this... but maybe you will actually. I got deported!!!! noooo!!!! They thought my passport was fake so they sent me back, so I went to Sacramento as a hired "Lampadarios" (left Cantor) at the Greek Church down there.

I actually wound up in NYC for a little while too... and now I completely understand "the tug." Also doing a half street tour in Cali for the past couple weeks was pretty fun too. Just got back into town about half a week ago and got food poisoning. GOO!

So today I got my Rubin classical guitar in the mail and tried my hand at memorizing the Chaconne as a first project... silly, I know, but it'd be a good way to benchmark what I am capable of on this wacky variation of the one true STEEL STRING GUITAR!!!! Just kidding... I have the D minor section memorized as of today, so hopefully I can get the sweet half done by the end of the week. I'm going to put a pickup and strap on this guitar and busk classical style every now and again, trying to look like paganini and stuff

I really think the three of us need to start a band. Or at the very least to be convenient the two of us... let's hustle out some vocal songs in the next two months and share !!!

p.s. do you think it'd be funny if I sat down and learned Aerial Boundaries backwards, and make a video showing that I know it "backwards and forwards???" I'm bored... Portland is kinda lame :/

Hey there,

Here's one from left field...

Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?

A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:

Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella

Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.

Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.

I encourage all to visit the YouTube page to learn more (Show support! Rate! Comment!) and responsibly circulate as widely as possible, here:

Help to raise awareness.

Say have you checked out my web site recently?

Take care and keep in touch.

Best,
Faber.
