| About Sean Genockey |
|
"Without music life would be a mistake." Friedrich Nietzsche It was the late 1970s and a young boy in short trousers was given the ultimate present. No it wasnt an Evil Knievel Stunt Cycle, a Rubik's Cube or even a GI-Joe-with-a-Kung-Foo-grip, it was a nylon-stringed guitar and because the boy was Sean Genockey it was akin to Luke Skywalker being handed his first light-sabre. As his long-suffering mother will testify, Sean spent every waking moment for the next decade relentlessely perfecting chords and teaching himself songs starting with House Of The Rising Sun and That'll Be the Day. Still it could have been worse for Mrs. Genockey and their neighbours, he could have followed in the footsteps of his father, world-renowned drummer Liam Genockey. The obsessive practising paid off and by the time he was 13 Sean was already a regular in the local pubs and clubs playing alongside seasoned musicians, often 3 or 4 times his age. Various bands came and went, including the catchily named Sean Genockey Band, before Seans first real taste of musical success. This success came in the form of Moke, a Led Zep inspired rock 4-piece based in South London. Moke went on to record two albums and spent several years touring the US (with bands like Black Crowes, Tonic, Kings X, Goo Goo Dolls) in the comfort (!) of a Dodge Ram before being consigned to the rock graveyard in the sky. Fortunately Sean had been paying close attention to the production of both Moke albums and he was already developing his skills as a producer so when he found himself bandless engineering seemed a natural step. One gig led to another and it wasnt long before he was signed to Solar Management (Zero 7, Nigel Godrich), as producer/mixer/engineer/musician/songwriter. From there it snowballed and five years later Sean's CV includes such names as Tom McRae, Manic Street Preachers, Starsailor, Kula Shaker, The Dykeenies, Suede, Boy Kill Boy and Mull Historical Society whilst he has worked with other producers/mixers including Dave Eringa (Manics, Ash, Idlewild), Paul Stacey (Oasis, The Kooks, Minuteman), Bob Clearmountain (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Who), Tim Palmer (U2, Pearl Jam, Robert Plant), Steve Bush (Stereophonics, Ocean Colour Scene), Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, The Pixies, Feeder), Dave Bascombe (Tears For Fears, The Engineers) and Stephen Hague (New Order, Blur). At the beginning of 2006 Sean opened his own studio in SW London, Black Dog Studio, and has since worked with Tom McRae, Reuben, Kula Shaker, Kubb, Wills & The Willing, Iko, Charlie Morton, Kish Mauve, Milburn, Dykeenies, Adam Masterson, B.B. & The Dead Dog, Outl4w, The Talks, Spin Marvel, Thea Gilmore, The Diarys, Baddies, The Conway Story and the Australian Number 1 album 'Breed Obsession' by Gyroscope, amongst others. Sean is currently working with Iko and Adam Masterson.
