God in all his or her beautiful forms, Momma, Terence, Dada (my grandfather), Amy, Harmony, Amanda Jean, Marianna, Sam, Jenny, Jami, and last but not least my newest muse Jeni... thank you all for letting me tell, create, and steal your stories and share them with to the world!
Growing up in the South during the 1980’s and 1990’s, folk singer/songwriter Sean Smith found his unique style in the hardships he faced as a black American. The Chattanooga, TN native has found inspiration in the political and social environment where he was raised – a place of unrest where the South was still struggling with the aftermath of the 1960’s civil rights movement. His country/blues style is rooted in his deep connection to the social injustices he so adamantly hopes to change.
Music was something Sean grew into – the way a kid grows into a brand new pair of shoes. As a child, Sean fought daily with white kids that teased him. At age 11, Sean came to realize how futile physical violence was and decided to put his energy into football and wrestling. Sean became a phenomenal wrestler, earning him a university scholarship. After two and a half semesters in college, Sean decided to drop out and enter the Air Force. While stationed in Abilene, TX, he began to write poetry about the chaotic world around him; through his poetry he discovered his passion for music. Eventually, Sean left the military and returned to college where he continued to work on his music.
Sean’s musical style can be described as a blend of great artists such as the Counting Crows, Bob Dylan, the Indigo Girls and Tracey Chapman. His acoustic folk sound and politically charged lyrics have provided him a stable fan base and stellar live performances. He has performed 150 to 200 nights a year all over the country and has shared the stage with some of the best, including Janis Ian, Leo Kottke and John Mayer. In 2007, he showcased at NACA Northern Plains Conference in Minneapolis, MN and NACA Mid Atlantic Conference in Lancaster, PA. In 2008, he showcased at the International Folk Alliance Conference. On September 27 2008, Sean will be performing at Swallow Hill Music Association.
Sean has recorded two albums, Painted Souls and Live @ Eddie’s Attic. He plans to release his long awaited third album in 2008 and a fourth in 2009. Sean is currently looking for label support to further his dream of changing the world through music and togetherness.
