| About Sean Tyla |
|
After a 22-year absence, 70s bad boy of rock, Sean Tyla finally returned. Sean started his recording career with CBS Records in 1970, releasing the self-penned single, Miracles under the name of Third World and recording an album project with Maynard Ferguson that was subsequently shelved. He then progressed to the United Artists band, Help Yourself in 1971 eventually forming Ducks Deluxe with Martin Belmont and Nick Garvey in 1972.
Sean and the Ducks were instrumental in setting up many of the venues on the now legendary London pub-rock circuit of the 70s and their no-nonsense, grinding rock-a-boogie attracted avid interest from the mainstream music industry, including Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, [who offered the Ducks a deal at Rolling Stone Records] CBS, EMI, Virgin and RCA who successfully signed the band in 1973.
The Ducks finally split in 1975. Nick Garvey left to form the Motors, Martin Belmont went to join Graham Parker in the Rumour and Sean went on to form the Tyla Gang. After releasing the single, Styrafoam on the Stiff label in late 1976, Sean and the Gang signed with California-based label, Beserkley Records in 1977, releasing two albums - Yachtless and Moonproof. Beserkley folded in 1979 but thanks to the generosity of Roger Daltrey and The Who, Sean cut his first solo album at the band's Ramport Studios in London.
Later that year, he signed a $250,000, five-album deal with Polydor International, had his first Top Ten single in Germany [where he eventually based himself] and apart from a one-off project in 1981 with Welsh rock legend, Deke Leonard, continued to enjoy chart successes as a solo artist with both albums and singles, throughout Europe until he retired in 1985.
The current band features Sean on lead vocals, guitar and keyboards, Dave Ironside on drums, Howard Gillespie on lead guitars and vocals [and anything else with strings on it!] and Gary Gahan on basses, guitar and vocals. Sean's current studio album, his ninth, [but first since 1983], features the formidable Ken Ward [Cream'd] on drums, Ian Ellis [Savoy Brown, Clouds] and Dave Rickaby, [Werewolves Of Stockton] on bass, Gary Moberley [Sweet, Bee Gees] ..boards, Chris Staines [Asia, Primal Scream] on guitar, mandolin and lap-steel, Paul Kennedy and Vaughan Lonsdale on guitar and the extremely talented Emma Fisk on acoustic and electric violin.
Most of Sean's back catalogue, with some added bonus tracks has now been re-issued and is widely available on the internet. The current album, entitled, 'Back In The Saddle' was re-released on September 1, 2008 on Sean's new label - Hawkhead Records and is available through iTunes and Amazon.
