   About Sebastiaan Cornelissen
.. Sebastiaan Cornelissen had his first approach to music at the early age of 5 years old. The Cornelissen family has been involved with art since a few generations back; Sebastiaan’s grandfather was a talented visual artist and his father is a well-respected double-bass player who played several decades in the Radio Symphony Orchestra and taught at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Surrounded by an atmosphere of classical and jazz influences, was Sebastiaan’s interest in drums what motivated his father to trade one of his basses for the first drumset Sebastiaan would play in his life. From there on, a firm discipline and an innate love for music would give his talent the technical foundations on which he would construct a successful career as a drummer, composer and producer. From the age of 10 till present, his full time activity as a drummer has been a fruitful trek. His tendency to blend a variety of influences –Allan Holdsworth, Weather Report, Wayne Shorter, etc- into a unique way of playing can be recognized without the danger of tagging it, and rather including it within the new voices in contemporary music. Between the years of 1997 and 2001, he studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he made his first contacts with recognized musicians, such as the pianist Rob Van Bavel, with whom he formed the group Isotope. In the year of 1999 they released Isotope and in 2002 Perception of the Beholder. This second release meant a huge professional step into a further level of production, which involved the introduction of 4 horn pllayers –for a seven piece band- and its recording for the very first time in the MDF Studios, a scenario provided by Sebastiaan, who in the past years had been working on the establishment of his very own studio. Technically, Perception of the Beholder sought to improve the orchestration and complexity of the compositions, in order to enrich the harmonic texture of the tunes; within the following productions, Sebastiaan’s quest for an even richer and unconventional sound would occupy his agenda as a composer and band leader. According to this outlook, Sebastiaan started to work –in the same year of 2002- on his debut solo album, Aggressive Attack. This time fully produced by Sebastiaan himself- in his own studio, Aggressive Attack signified the opening to other horizons, as the participation of prestigious international musicians –Leonardo Amuedo, Lale Larson, Eef Albers- and an acoustic concept in which the main target was to construct an outline closer to jazz, that, in comparison with the previous releases, is full of contrasts for a more matured sound. Around the same time, Sebastiaan was asked to give masterclasses and clinics in several European countries, which endorsed him as one of the most skillful drummers from The Netherlands. Since then, Sebastiaan’s evolution has taken different routes in the direction of a more dynamic creative production, which had its apex in 2005, year of the release of Time Line and One Spirit. It is in this period that Sebastiaan performs with diverse acknowledged musicians as Randy Brecker, Rocco Zifarelli, Gary Willis(Wayne Shorter/Tribal Tech), Gary Husband(Level42/Allan Holdsworth), Steve Hunt(Allan Holdsworth), Lale Larson, Shawn Lane, Frank Gambale(Chick Corea), Susan Weinert, Wayne Johnson and Gerard Presencer (Herbie Hancock, Sting) amongst others. Sebastiaan continues developing new projects that reinforce his experimental and innovative nature towards a potential future and a thriving artistic career. A brand new solo album is about to be released under his own label, U-turn Records. As before, some of the finest musicians in jazz feature in this new production, such as Gary Husband (keys), Gerard Presencer (flugelhorn/trumpet), Steve Hunt (keys), Leonardo Amuedo (guitar), Marc Guillermont (guitar), Frans Vollink (bass). Alongside with his composition and production projects, Sebastiaan keeps on carrying out his tutoring in the UK, at The Goldsmiths University & The Royal Academy of Music in London. Sebastiaan plays Ayotte drums, Agean Cymbals & sE Electronics Microphones exclusively.

Hey Sebastiaan,
Thanks for introducing me to your music, My compliments! I like your uptight and almost "jumping" grooves on 'Leo's Dance'. Your ride- and hihat work really gets it's place on 'Ruud 'n Dof'. 'CanDo' and 'done', really present a great melancholic / earie feel, also 'done' has some great grooves, which i cant really put my finger on, the guitar sound is also awesome. Your overall improvisation around song-texture is also really nice, and works extremely well in 'Coaxxx'... Also some cool video's here. I'll check more of your work later.
-keep creating!
Lalle Larsson
