Coming from the 'journey' school of DJing, Sebastian is a believer in the idea that
behind every great performance is a transferal of energy between the crowd and the
DJ. He likes to play a number of styles in one set - not pronounced like Laurent
Garnier or big tune like Pete Tong - in a subtle way melding the hypnotic side of techno,
minimal, tech house and electro.
This style was formed when Sebastian was resident at two of Beijing's most infamous
clubs playing five hour sets, warming up or finishing for all manner of guest DJs
and always playing to a international crowd with different tastes.
Forging a production career with his first release, 'Dub City EP' through Kisu Music Germany, reaching a very respectable 7 in the German Club Charts. Sebastian's EP was charted by DJs all over the world, from Australia to China, Russia to Europe. He has also recently completed a remix of Little Nobody's classic 'Cocaine Speaking', and is putting the finishing touches on his second EP for Kisu.
Best recognised for his part in pioneering electronic dance music in Beijing and mainland China, Sebastian spent four years working in Beijing from 2000-4. He held a coveted residency at Club VOGUE (or 88 as the Chinese referred to it) where he played with many fantastic DJs including: Laurent Garnier; Derrick May and Adam Freeland. After VOGUE closed, his boss Henry Li opened another venue called The CLUB, where Sebastian was again resident. The CLUB became 'the' late night haunt in Beijing where other DJs, producers and punters would come and listen to the five hour sets Sebastian played each Friday. DJs as varied as Christian Smith, Dr Kucho! and Paul Godfey from Morcheeba played there too.
While in China Sebastian also co-organise and was billed at the two most publicised Great Wall parties featuring Global Underground and Paul Oakenfold. He enjoyed playing regularly at the PLUS techno parties with the likes of Technasia, Ken Iishi, Shin Nishimura and Mickey Zhang. Sebastian also hosted his own Elektrobeat parties with his then DJ partner, Usami; together they brought with the likes of We Love ..., Zouk and Slinky to Beijing. As a guest DJ Sebastian also performed in no less than a dozen cities in mainland China, and in Hong Kong.
Before living in China, Sebastian made his mark in Australia where he started his professional DJ career debuting at the infamous Happy Valley festival in 2000. He was also known for his regular guest appearances at one of Sydney's most respected club nights, Tech-ni-kal @ The Chinese Laundry. Sebastian worked as an editor of dance music magazine 3D World and was a freelance contributor to many other publications. His talents also extended to event production where he was part of the team who hosted the Flash techno parties in Sydney featuring Detroit greats Juan Atkins, Carl Craig and Claude Young.
Most recently Sebastian has been living in London where he has been putting all his energy into making his own music. Wanting to hone his production skills having been self-taught, he took some short courses at Point Blank Music College. This resulted in two of his tracks being signed to their music publishing company for use in media. He was also employed by the community youth projects division of Point Blank as a tutor of event production, computer music production and DJing.
Sebastian's lasting passion for dance music was sparked in the UK where, as a student of philosophy and politics at the University of Southampton, he started buying up old R&S Records 12'' singles at the university market day. During these years living between Southampton and London, he also found inspiration frequenting clubs like Club UK, where in particular, a five hour set by Laurent Garnier made him understand the scope of electronic music. While studying he also worked with Squeeze 18 and other groups promoting and organising parties from 1994-6. Squeeze hosted high profile events such as the first Ministry of Sound club tour and LTJ Bukem's original Logical Progression tour, as well as supporting then underground DJs like Josh Wink, Nick Warren and Colin Dale at smaller club nights.
