My name is Sebastian Wild. I’m a DJ and promoter from Christchurch, New Zealand. I’m currently aged 19 and have been DJing since the age of 14 and have been listening to dance music from about the age of 7! My DJ name was once Disorder and I used to play Hard Dance up until late last year. Seeing acts such as Carl Cox, Eddie Haliwell, Above and Beyond, Sander van Doorn and Kyau & Albert has inspired me to change my musical direction in the past 8 – 9 months. I’m now trying to move away from defining the genre I play as it seems to limit my sets and variety of tracks. I’m sure you’ll gain a rough idea from my top 10 below and my new CD “Redefined” (Please feel free to download it) as it ranges from Minimal House / Electro right up to cranking Tech-Trance.
Over the past 5 years (Note: I've only legally been able to start supporting acts at age restricted events for a little over a year now!) I’ve supported the likes of Kyau + Albert, Scott Bond, The Rouge Element, Nick Sentience, Dj Taka, James Lawson, Ilogik, Phil Reynolds, Steve Hill, Phil York, Technikal, Paul Glazby, James Nardi, High Dosage, Ben Stevens, Daniel Ro, Eamonn Fevah, Weaver, Unknown and many more. This has also seen me play at some of New Zealand’s finest events including: Slinky, Nrgize, Decadance, Global Panic, Fragile, Nitrate, R-One, Massive, Unity, White Elephant, Rinsed and more. I am currently a resident for Nitrate and Nrgize, which see’s me play out fairly regularly with some of the best names on the harder circuit and the biggest events in Christchurch.
As I mentioned above, the end of 2006 and into 2007 has seen me move away from Hard Dance and pitch my music down a notch. In February 2007 I broke away from the hard dance trend and I ran my first official R18 event at Christchurch’s leading dance venue, Base with two trance DJ’s ranked 48th in the world, Kyau & Albert. Both Ralph and Steven were fantastic guys; it was an absolute pleasure to host them in Christchurch for their NZ tour. The night was a huge success and it was great to finally see a world ranking trance act back in Christchurch!
My other major focus at present is my all-age brand Nitrate. Nitrate Promotions has been running successfully now for a little over 3 years. I started it in late 2003 at the age of 15 and it has grown from a small website to one of the most well respected brands in Christchurch. Nitrate now boasts the largest online database for dance music enthusiasts in the all-age domain, now reaching nearly 1500 members. As an event, Nitrate is now the largest all-age dance event in Christchurch. Nitrate 2nd Birthday sold out one of the largest crowds we have seen in many years of around 1000 people. It was fantastic to see and also a good reminder that dance music is slowly becoming more popular with the younger age bracket. Nitrate has also hosted a few international acts such as, Phil Reynolds and James Lawson (Impact). Both acts were very suited to the Nitrate crowd and it was a fantastic opportunity to expose world class artists to a group of people that would usually be unable to see them. Therefore I am also a firm supporter of anyone trying to grow dance music to a larger audience.
Back to the music, my sets have always been generally energetic and uplifting. They still are to some extent. The last 8 months has seen me change my style drastically. The comments I received on the first proper tech-trance set I played last year in December at Nrgize’s James Lawson event were fantastic (and are still coming to this day!) and gave me good cause to pursue that line of music further. This has also seen my mixing get far more technical, always trying to keep it as interesting as possible for the punter and always ensuring I have energy behind the decks. I realised early on, many DJ’s were good but not great due to their lack of enthusiasm for their music while playing, and something that becomes very clear when seeing an artist such as Eddie Haliwell or Carl Cox take total control of their crowd. I encourage you to download my new CD “Redefined” as it is the most accurate example of my current style and ability.
