"It's a group we'll likely be hearing from in 2008."
- John Fordham (The Guardian Newspaper)
“Seb is pushing the boundaries and experimenting with some very innovative concepts…it is individuals like him who move the art form forward.”

Ever seeking, questioning and studying, Pipe has always been driven by his love and appreciation of all forms of creative musical expression. Séb was drawn to music from an early age, he first blew into the alto saxophone at the age of 7 when it was bigger than him! He later began to study guitar, piano and drums. At school, Pipe enjoyed sharing music with others whilst performing as part jazz groups and big bands. He also received tuition from London-based saxophonist James Knight who helped open Séb’s ears to the saxophone’s sonic capabilities. Séb moved to London in 2001 and studied for the ‘Jazz BMus’ degree ‘Trinity College of Music’ where he graduated in 2005 with 1st Class Honours and was also awarded the ‘Services to Jazz’ prize. During his time at Trinity Seb’s most influential teachers included tenor saxophonist heavyweights Julian Argüelles and Jean Toussaint (former sideman with Art Blakey’s ‘Jazz Messengers’). Pipe was also coached by musical pioneer Steve Coleman and his group ‘5 Elements’ when he attended weeklong intensive workshops in Montpellier (July 2001) and Paris (September 2007) as part of ‘La Villette Jazz Festival’.
Pipe has collaborated with a wide variety of musicians and groups from France, Italy, Portugal and Japan. In October 2004, he was asked to perform as a special guest during a series of concerts in Tokyo Japan, with the ‘Andy Davies Quartet’. Séb also joined the Portuguese jazz group ‘Pequenos Mundos’ in Easter 2004 when he toured with the group, performing at venues in Porto and at Lisbon’s ‘Hot Clube’. Pipe later joined the ubiquitous bass player Larry Bartley’s Quartet in 2008, which has performed around London and at the ‘Ealing Jazz Festival’ in July 2008. Séb also leads his own trio which has a monthly residency at the ‘Royal Academy of Arts’, Piccadilly, London.
Pipe’s main focus is leading his core group ‘Séb Pipe’s Life Experience’ with pianist Arthur Lea, bassist Larry Bartley and Phil Donkin and drummers George Hart and Chris Vatalaro. Pipe states that his philosophy seeks to “continuously strive to learn and develop oneself”. He cites his groups as comprising “forward-thinking musicians who share a passion for creative musical expression and communication.” Their music is forged from “idiosyncratic concepts, tight grooves and bold improvisations”. Pipe is continuously striving to draw inspiration a vast array of musical cultures and traditions including the African Diaspora; the Balkans; the Far East, India and Europe.
In the Summer of 2006 ‘Séb Pipe’s Life Experience’ was awarded funding by ‘Jazz Services’ (jazzservices.org) for their first U.K./Portuguese tour where they performed as part of the ‘Estremoz Jazz Festival’. In November 2006 ‘Séb Pipe’s Life Experience’ was proud to perform as part of ‘London Jazz Festival’ at ‘The Spitz’, London, as part of a double bill with fellow altoist Tony Kofi. Later in the same year, ‘Life Experience’ was awarded a £1500 development prize by the ‘Musicians Benevolent Fund’ (mbf.co.uk) funded by the ‘Arts Council England’ for their outstanding performance during an audition for the ‘Peter Whittingham Award’. This prize money was used to fund ‘Séb Pipe’s Life Experience’ eponymously entitled debut album which features Séb Pipe (Alto Sax), Arthur Lea (Piano), Larry Bartley (Double Bass) and Chris Vatalaro (drums) and was recorded in February 2007 at the ‘606’, one of London’s top jazz clubs. The CD was subsequently distributed by ‘Proper Access’, is available from major online retailers including ‘Amazon’ and ‘itunes’. It was also very well received by the media and was featured on ‘BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Line Up’ hosted by Claire Martin and Jack Massarik. The album was also favourably reviewed in the press by John Fordham in the ‘Guardian Newspaper’, Peter Bacon in the ‘Birmingham Post’, Chris Parker on the ‘Vortex Jazz Club’ website and was listed in the top 10 albums for sale in January 2008 in ‘Ray’s Jazz Shop’ in ‘Foyle’s Bookshop’ London.
Soon after in the same month ‘Séb Pipe’s Life Experience’ was voted by the public as one of top bands to feature on the artboo.com website. The band was consequently asked to perform on ‘SKY’s Red TV Channel’ during a programme showcasing young, up and coming bands.
At the same time ‘Séb Pipe’s Life Experience’ was delighted to be selected among 8 U.K. bands to receive the ‘Jazz Services’ (jazzservices.org) ‘Recording and Touring Award’ funded by the ‘Arts Council England’. This will enable Life Experience to record their next album which is scheduled for release in early 2009 by jazz label ‘33 Records’. The album will form part of a special series of 8 albums featuring the cutting-edge original music from around the U.K. ‘Séb Pipe’s Life Experience’ new album will also coincide with a U.K. tour in 2009.
In Summer 2008, ‘Séb Pipe’s Life Experience’ performed a series of concerts in Milan, Italy and in Switzerland in Summer 2008. The group also continues to perform around London at venues including: 606 Jazz Club, The Spice Of Life (Leicester Square), The Crypt (Camberwell), Octave Bar (Covent Garden), and The Vortex Jazz Club.
The quest continues…
