Like a phoenix from the ashes, Northwest supergroup Jaguar Love features guitarist Cody Votolato and singer Johnny Whitney from The Blood Brothers, along with J Clark from Pretty Girls Makes Graves (guitarist then, now drummer,multi-instrumentalist and producer). However, the story is very different. After relocating to Portland from Seattle, these ferociously creative and once-noisy musicians have now added incredibly catchy melody to their songwriting. Votolato's crazed Japanese electric 12-string guitar parts remain as intricate and Beefheart-esque as ever, but Whitney has turned his scream to Bolan-esque glam. Result: Pop music. Of a sort. Formed in 2002, the Lawrence, Kansas five-piece has endured much in endeavoring to be a band—a distinct, resonant and exciting project as their two EPs and hundreds of performances would argue—over the past four years. Primarily, however, Ad Astra Per Aspera has taken the care and time of experience to grow into their new record, with Catapult Calypso as inspirational evidence that their creative resources have not been sapped, nor their candid musical adventurism disenchanted in the process. Instead, AAPA asserts with Catapult Calypso that this is how it feels to be animated by noise, rhythm, melody and lyrical impressions. Rocky Votolato composed these 12 original songs late ‘96/early ’97 in Seattle. Being deeply entrenched in the northwest underground punk scene at the time, he recorded them in keeping with this philosophy. He set up two microphones in a basement and recorded the entire record live in a 4-hour period. What was captured is an intimate and organic picture of what these songs would have actually sounded like if you were listening to him play for you in a dark quiet room. No overproducing or effects of any kind – vocal or otherwise – just an unpolluted look at the songs. Though written almost 30 years later, these songs carry the same kind of darkness and quiet existential suffering expressed in Nick Drake’s albums. This understated and honest record marks the beginning of a journey for one of the best and most original songwriters making music in America today.

It’s been 13 lucky years since Coalesce first entered a studio, and still no one’s topped the Kansas City, Missouri quartet’s paradigm-flipping noise/metal/hardcore mash-up. Before attaining Celestial heights, Isis plumbed the deepest and densest of musical depths with The Red Sea. Punishing and unrelenting, The Red Sea marked a new chapter in Isis' mosquito-driven, conceptual universe. Incorporating nods to both vintage Earth and the Melvins, it was the two new "song" offerings that marked ISIS' growth beyond that of mere comparisons and demonstrated the grandeur of what was to follow. The B-side of the 12-Inch features Isis' 1998, four-song demo. Showing a glimpse of Isis in their formative stages, these four songs are harmful metallic shards driven by their influences (Neurosis, Godflesh, etc.), yet demonstrate Isis' proficiency and potential. The Red Sea stands as both a testament to Isis's past and their future.
This repress marks the first time The Red Sea has been available on vinyl since the limited edition 8-Inch pressing in 1999.

Originally recorded in May of 2001 immediately following their debut album In Plain Song, the sophomore recording from Lawrence, Kansas The Higher Burning Fire is finally available to the world half a decade later. The epic and orchestral scope of earlier, Left Banke inspired work has been focused to a leaner sound. Things take a decidedly more mellow turn for "Sound" and "The City Maps". The former evokes a sunny indie-cum-adult-contemporary landscape driven by singer Than Kinsey's tender voice, a cutting organ and guitar, while the latter is probably the most realized and ambitious boy/girl duet in underground music in recent memory. The closing track, "Once You Her" finds bassist Raymond Morin assuming vocal duties, backed by the thundering drums of John Anderson, the slide guitar and organ stylings of guitarist Zach Holland, and a haunting chorus of female voices. Members of The Higher Burning Fire currently make up 3/5 of White Whale.
