    Ross's Interests
General
I laughed. The sniper kitty got me good. "I upgraded your ram" lol! "Oh god, I can see FOREVER!" LOLx2.

Gah. Too many interests keeps the focus shifty.

History – that’s fun…Rome; Egypt; Briton; Europe; Athens.

God…thanks for the playground.

Philosophy…thanks for mucking up the playground.

Neurology…thanks for the insights.

Chiropractic…thanks for being amazing.

Women…oh, my dear and fluffy lord!

Vanity…uh, thanks?

Truth…you…elusive…son…of…a…

Story…teach me.

Passion…rule me.

Desire…inspire me.

Wisdom…guide me.

Courage…face me.

Will…obey me.

Strength…don’t fail me.

Discipline…keep me.

Love…challenge me.

Faith…above all, faith, lift me.
MusicClean and crisp, with story. Straight up. Imbue with meaning, bring joy, all the better. Yoked to moving pictures is best.

Here I will post the evolution of the songs I link here, why they were chosen and why they were switched. That's the idea, anyway.

Okay, so let's get started...

First song I linked was "Galileo" by Indigo Girls...why? Well, I like the song. But more, it's a hommage to the woman that introduced me to it (yes, you, Kristen). She thought I'd like it, and in liking her, I still like the song.

Next song on the platter...hmm...
Sting's "Don't Stand So Close To Me". I like the story and remember fondly singing it...I'd let loose with a line from the song and a fellow employee (Red Lobster - tour of duty: 5 years as server) Chris Jam (he looked like AND sounded like Sting - and this guy could write...yeah, he's super cool) would jump in with the next line. I thought the song told a really cool story, and Sting's voice is about perfect, so, yeah, I likes it. Makes a fine entry. Without further adieu, I bring you...STING!

New song from Buffy The Vampire Slayer musical "Once More With Feeling". Why's it on here? I watched this episode for the first time within the last week (9/2/06 as of this writing) and, being caught up in a contagious fixation concerning the amorous Fire and Ice relationship between Buffy and Spike, well, this song moves me. For all the artisans who crafted this episode I give you a well deserved "thank you!"

MoviesI loves them. A few of my favorites are: Moulin Rouge; Phantom of the Opera; Big Fish; The Big Lebowski; Gladiator; Dune; Blade Runner; The Matrix; Dangerous Liaisons; The Russia House; The Professional; Pulp Fiction; Lord of the Rings; and far too many more.
Television

Firefly. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Angel. Lost. Battlestar Galactica; Rome; Carnivale; X-Files; In Search Of; Nearly anything on History Channel or Discover. And now add "Veronica Mars" to the mix...scrumpdillyicious!
BooksThe older; the better. Make it a first edition and kinda rare, even more shiny. “Dune” – Frank Herbert; “A Song of Ice and Fire” – George R.R. Martin
HeroesBene Gesserit. Buffy. Joss Whedon. Jane Espenson. George R.R. Martin. A head above all of these: mom.

This just in... Feline Hero Polls (FHP) are now closed. Osiris, my 17 year old Egyptian Mau who is regal, refined, affectionate in measure - at arms length, and has a noisy dignity - has won! I'll accept the award on his behalf. Please, don't mention this to the cat. He cannot know of this; it'd tarnish the balance of power.

About me:

Hey, God, I’ve orbited the sun, what, thirty-eight times now? While I'm not fond, Good Sir, of the rapidity of the ride - I sure don't want to get off. Oh, we’ve guests! The “royal” we, thank you very much. How goes it with you, guest? Tea? Donuts? Got a fruitcake, want that? Whattya need? Um, no. Cheesecake’s mine. So, you want to luxuriate in my space…it’ll cost ya. I’ve not sussed out exactly what it’ll cost you, but, you assume it will and all goes better, okay? Good.

I’m, like, really tall…six-three. Well, that’s not wholly true… a doc said I was supposed to hit six-three, learned that at one of the child quantification exams; so having come in at a paltry five-eleven seems a bit of a gyp.

Me origins, they’re much like your own. It all started with an egg and a flagellated gizmo that broke through mom’s defensive mainframe – probably dressed like James Bond, probably. Then there was the birth thing. The growing up thing. The mom in Oregon thing, the dad in Michigan thing, the traveling between the two. Never went to the same school twice until a junior in high school.

And in short order: bodybuilding through high school…girl…love…break up…ouch….don’t graduate high school…job here…job there…meet girl, fall in love…job over there…begin college…sprinkle writing throughout…still bodybuilding…hey, I think I might be intelligent!…less bodybuilding…move to Saint Louis to attend chiropractic college…meet hot girl and fall madly in love…lots of studying…hey, when was the last time I exercised...more studying…vacation…break up with hot girl…ouch…more studying…new hot girl moves in, she’s really cool, and intelligent like the dickens…graduate…move to Springfield…conquer some fears…let others fester…didn't I used to exercise some years ago...stop practicing…new job as fundraiser…hot girl’s frog fails to turn into a prince…ouch…learn lots about selling, writing, and leadership…and we’re pretty much up to the present.

And that's thirty-eight zingers around old Sol. Personally, I think God snuck in an extra dozen on me while I wasn't looking.

10-4-08

What an amazing weekend! The guy who stole my car was pulled over, in my car, and taken to wherever they take those guys. He was rough on my ride, kind of junked it up a bit for me (hey, dude, what'd the door to the gas tank ever do to you?), and I got to spend sixty bucks to have the tow lot fork over the keys, but the real gem to this story is the dude left me some donuts in the glove box. Oh, and the breath mints. Oh, yeah, can't forget the unopened stickers in the back seat and the fake nails (brilliant red, stunning) in their unopened package. I've not had the guts to touch the hat that was left in the trunk. So, yeah, got my car back on Saturday and even if it is quite a bit more "hoopty" than when I left it - it's a ride.

Then came a surprise. A friend came over and asked how I felt about wearing blind folds. Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too. And she's hot so, you know, what the hell, "gimme the blind fold!" I put this thing on, get led to her car feeling all manner of odd, and off we drive. Five minutes later I know we're in downtown Springfield but where? I'm told to walk and I reach out for an arm hoping my guide knows to look out for rakes, curbs, cars and all those other cartoon problems for the blindfolded.

Here's a tip - when the guide says "there's a step up coming" do your best to freeze time, back it up a bit and find a way to get that message a second earlier - it'll save the painful element of treating your big toe like a spear you're trying to drive through solid concrete.

Then I'm informed we're crossing a street. Then the command "There's a car coming, run!" And she's laughing. Hysterically. This is going to be the dumbest death ever.

The far side of the street was gained. A door opened and I ushered inside. When I was told it was okay to remove my blindfold I found myself in a big, wood floored room with earthy tones, artsy walls, and some tables piled high with stuff. And staring back at me are a bunch of happy faces pointed in my direction.

"SURPRISE!"

It's a baby shower. For me! Holy cows. All these wonderful people... let me say, simply, that I was very touched. They floored me, one and all. This was one of the best days ever. To have your friends treat you so kindly, out of the seeming blue, touches a chord way down deep in a place few people ever touch. I was deeply moved. And that's all I have to say about that!

Here are a couple of photos from the baby shower.
Thanks once again Troy and Jamie and Athel and Carrie and Cindy and Adam and Dallas and Laura - and to my friends that couldn't make it but helped make this special: Jon, Jay, Chris, Dave, and Jacob.

The video below is of Paul Potts...Out comes the shy man in a shlubby suit-you know it's the best he's got--his teeth aren't straight and he smiles like he's hiding them and other pains he's endured. He's humble. He's got a face and demeanor that makes me hope the best for him. He's all alone up there before people he can't count as friends. His courage carries him. It carried me. When he says what he's there to do the judges have raised brows, no confidence there; surely he's noted it. Then he sings... Now, I like opera. I've been moved to tears by it before. But nothing like this. This isn't just a guy singing, there's a touching, brave, heroic journey here. The audience senses it immediately. The judges are quickly warmed over. And he finishes singing and he stands there bravely, all alone. You can tell he isn't at all sure what's about to assail him. He doesn't know, it's written right there on his face. He doesn't know how damned good he is. You can see he's braced for the worst. Even though I know there's no way in hell he's getting a bad comment from the judges it breaks my heart to see him not know. And so we wait with him, desperately looking for approval from people we shouldn't need approval from. And the verdict comes... Damned good story! There is something about the unassuming person, who was picked on, maybe didn't have all the friends they deserved, and they have beauty or strength or talent in them that should never have gone unobserved. I have been this person. You probably have, too. And we're like Paul Potts, just, people don't know it yet.

Here's a video of lots of different actors from your favorite shows demonstrating what their craft is like without writers. Hi-larious!

On the writer's strike...and the absurdity of paying the writers nothing, nodda, zero for their work when it's associated with the internet.

The boys: Osiris, Bela, Clay, and Ross. Or "The books, the cat, the rabbit out of the hat, and a brother who I love dearly."

Who I'd like to meet:
God – questions need answers. Socrates - you're to blame, corruptor! Joss Whedon. Jane Espenson. George R.R. Martin. Paul Atreides. Asha Greyjoy – mmm, Asha…

Oh, and a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother. That'd be great.

STOP! Would one take a moment, one would find one's self beside one's self while admiring my shiny new friend, Nate. Yes, yes, Nate comes with the whole "Joss action pack" cast of characters. Shakespeare readings 'ere I come!

that sounds about right for a sunday :) i don't know if i'm quite as precise with my words, and it's a little early for me to give a completely accurate account... i would call my attitude today... promising. yesterday, my "status" was simply "good," but yesterday my car wouldn't start, so today is bound to be an improvement! getting ready for a bbq with my fam... potentially lovely day :)

I'll try and visit the book store, I'm addicted to books. I think I'm just gonna start grabbing things and reading them, make it my goal to read at least half the books in the library before I die.
And if I don't have time for the bookstore, there's always next time
