| General | THE BALLAD OF JO JO LAINE
Words & Music by Joe Vig
Additional lyrics Jimmy Miller
I've had a galaxy of pop star, pop star lovers
a lot of B-sides, under my covers
from Hendrix all the way to Spain
a close encounter with Jo Jo Laine
I write little letters with little red hearts
so many promises, and many false starts
from L.A. to London, so hard to contain
A close encounter with Jo Jo Laine
She Thinks she's randy/she thinks she's hot
she's out of Ira's will/but her daughter's not
On Sunset Strip as Dr. Jimmy sings
a long way from the Stones, A long way from Wings
Just like Dihann Carol from Dynasty
the red-headed Alexis, who could it be?
James the A & R man, the acid queen
hooked on his blotto, he split the scene
with Michael from Malta it was all a haze
we call that the Jimmy Miller days
| | Books | 1st draft liner notes
In 1989, the year after I managed Mission Control Studio with Jimmy Miller as producer, Jay Couper worked diligently on old demos that I had recorded on a cassette at 30 Dragon Court in Woburn. Some of the pieces of songs, "I'm Breaking Through", came from the Intuition Element days of 1983-1984, perhaps earlier. The cassettes have that band performing a version in the basement, but it was never finished or just abandoned by us at the time. The song had more of a techno groove when conceived by me, rocked out hard by Jeff Hill & Fudge, but Jay & Scott Couper made it - wonderfully - pure pop. Other songs I completely forgot I had written - "External Identities", "Stretch Across The Universe", "Lost & Found", but here it all is in the "Lost & Found". Jay and Scott made me a "Count Boxed Set" one Christmas, which is where these "lost" tapes were found. Eric Brown joined us in Needham and we re-recorded "Go On", "Cat In The Dark", our version of "Tonight Will Be Insane" a new version of my "The Night Will Be Insane" from the "Love & Flame" days. It's actually the same lyrics, Eric just wrote all new music under it. "Violet Dawn" is pretty amusing as I was enamoured of John Rechy's "City Of Night" - the book that led to Jim Morrison's line in "L.A. Woman". Don't know if Mr. Rechy should be credited as I yanked words from all over his book and reassembled them. They make an entirely new profile, ahem, here. Not as perverted! HA!
Jay put the original cassette demos on CDR and they sound pretty cool years later, so - rather than put the demo of say "Stretch My Hand Across The Universe", which is just me on guitar, I've put "Reflecting On You" and "I Come Alive At Night" on this disc - the original piano demos, raw, and never meant to be released.

"Secret Things" edit by Ken Selcer
THE SECRET THINGS CD. Sometime in 1988 or 1989 Jay
Couper went through numerous cassette tapes recorded
at the legendary 30 Dragon Court on the piano and in
the basement. "Breaking Through" being an out-take
from the Jimmy Miller produced "Intuition Element"
album, most everything else was just myself on piano
or guitar. In the case of "Can't Tell Them Who You
Really Are" it is me banging away on the 6 string
Fender unplugged, not my usual 12 string acoustic that
I write a lot of songs on. "Reflecting On You" is a
good glimpse on how I construct tunes - from
inspiration to sitting down and banging it out. The
lyrics are usually throwaway lines that can be
re-worked later.
Jay came up with so much material that I let too many
incomplete poems surface. I feel badly about that as
the work Scott & Jay Couper did on the album is really
extraordinary. When we're pop, we're pop. When it is
hard rock - like "Voices in the Night" a.k.a. "Angels
In The Night" it is hard rock; when we get
experimental like "Stretch My Hand Across The
Universe", well, it is terrific musical exploration
with fantasy overtones.
I purposely kept the Eric Brown collaborations off of
this as they fit nicely on our "Cat In The Dark"
album.

Songs like "Thought About You" and "Reflect Love" are
very moving while "Love Reflection", which is a revved
up "Reflect Love", has a lot of good energy. "The
Ballad Of Jo Jo Laine" is pretty much unfinished,
lyrically and musically. But it exists, so - like the
rest of this work - music that fell through the cracks
preserved here for your enlightenment and enjoyment.
