For a second, ponder the life of John Mayer. This is a guy, after all, who has sold millions of records and can't go to the grocery store to buy tooth paste without a half-dozen photographers trying to take his picture. He is one of the most famous and successful musicians in the world.
And yet, here is the thing that makes John Mayer so awesome. He is normal. And we're not talking sort of normal. We're talking ridiculously normal. Which is probably why, despite all he has been through the past few years, his fanbase has stayed so loyal. That much seemed evident nearly eighteen hours before this incredibly intimate show in Brooklyn, when fans began sleeping in their cars to assure that they gained access into this 550-capacity club.

But, hey, it was worth it: Not only was this the first time in years that Mayer has played a venue this size, but he ran through a marathon set that lasted nearly two-and-a-half hours. Tellingly, Mayer opened early with "Heartbreak Warfare," from his critically acclaimed new album Battle Studies, and though he played the album's incredibly charming first single "Who Says" later in the show, he and his crack band concentrated on moving around his extensive catalog. From "Waiting On The World To Change" to "Gravity" to even a recently recorded cover of "Crossroads" by Robert Johnson, they were all covered.

Hell, at one point Mayer even borrowed a fan's digital camera and played a slide guitar solo with it. (Sorry to those who missed it, but that kind of thing ain't gonna happen when he comes back to play your local arena.) The most telling moment of the night, however, came just before he played "Why Georgia" from his 2001 breakthrough Room For Squares. As Mayer looked out into the crowd, he explained that the song was "for all of those who were afraid that they would lose him to fame" and that it was proof that he was still that kid in his mom's 1991 Plymouth "trying to figure it out."

And, really, he still was that guy, even if he was putting on the kind of once-in-a-lifetime show that many of his fans will never forget.
