Dave Dri (Production, Live Synths & Samplers)
Leo Hede (Production, Live Sequencing)
Kris Swales (Production, Live Drums)
Jaymis Loveday (VJ'ing, Live Visuals & VJ sync)
1. Music. To make a transition directly from one section or theme to another
2. To move smoothly and unhesitatingly from one state, condition, situation, or element to another
Dance music production units often choose intentionally abstract monikers, but for Segue the name is an apt description of both their union and musical philosophy. This merger of Brisbane scene veterans Leo Hede and Dave Dri only took shape in early 2006, yet already Segue are being touted as the next live act to break out of Brisbane and into the national clubbing consciousness.
Not that Hede and Dri are unfamiliar with rocking massive crowds on a regular basis. As part of electro-tech duo Statler & Waldorf, Hede has released a critically acclaimed EP and album, remixed Sarah Blasko, scored high-rotation on Triple J and played massive festivals such as Big Day Out and Earthcore Global Carnival. Dri also has a wealth of experience, pounding the east coast of Australia with respected breaks collective Superfluid on the back of album releases on seminal Australian label Creative Vibes before undertaking a solo tour of Europe in 2004 which saw him become the first Australian to perform at Serbia’s celebrated Exit Fest.
Sensing a musical change in the wind and recognising the growing similarities between the music they were producing as solo entities, the duo put together an improvised set at an outdoor event on a Queensland beach in late 2005. The pair’s fusion of progressive techno and broken electro blended immediately, and thus Segue was born.
Since announcing their arrival, Segue have rapidly made an impact on the Brisbane club scene, due in part to their monstrous live performance rig. With two laptops, synths, samplers, MIDI controllers and FX units all triggered live on stage, let alone the synchronised live visuals rig with VJ Jaymis, Segue are willing to walk the tightrope in the live arena where some of their higher profile contemporaries baulk at performing without a safety net. “It’s the eternal and much argued balance between risk and self indulgence” Dri says, and reaction to their sets so far suggests the risk is paying off big time.
Chalking up praised performances as in demand support acts for UK dirty-house duo King Unique and progressive house prodigy Jaytech, Segue stepped up to headline antics at iconic Brisbane events such as the iconic DROP @ Moon Bar. Making themselves at home in this bastion of the underground, Segue developed their live set before bursting out in the daylight for a crowd of 5000 party people at Australia's largest touring festival, the Big Day Out. Introducing Kris-Ko on drums and tearing through a percussive tribal and progressive house set, the trio closed off with the acid house squelches of their first single "Reset", signed to Smash Bang Records.
From positive early DJ reaction to tracks including ‘Setlist’ inhabiting the crates of local favourite Scott Walker; and the eclectic world of MP3 blogs going nuts over the dirty acid house remix of Chemical Brother's "Electronic Battle Weapon 9", Segue have balanced the aesthetic of a live act with the inevitable studio mixdowns to capture the energy of the stage in a form fit for DJ's and the ever increasing request for tracks.
Taking a break through the latter half of 2008 to work on remixes for artists including Amsterdam's Vitreous, and for Australian label Smash Bang Records, Segue are preparing for a busy 2009 with a return to European soils mid year. In 2009, like the years before, Segue are electric.
