As planning is approaching top gear level to mark with a big celebration the first decade, of the passing of the creator and King of afrobeat Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. A celebration, that would assemble all groups playing afrobeat world-wild at the Africa Shrine Lagos Nigeria, in a-week long musical pilgrimage and street carnival, death has come again knocking on the afrobeat-family doors. Segun Damisa, leader of the defunct Abuja based afrobeat group: Alkebu-lan and founder, of the Bordeaux based Afrobeat Crusaders died of generalised cancer July 17, 2006 in France.

A child of Kalakuta, Segun started his musical apprenticeship as a percussion player at a very young age, when he joined Felas Kalakuta community in the late seventies. Spending most of his teenage and early adult life in Felas kalakuta no doubt left an indelible mark on his life and musical career. He left Felas commune for a brief stint with King Sunny Ade during the period the Juju music maestro recorded his highly popular Sweet Banana and My Dear albums in Nigeria. In 1986, Femi Kuti after quitting his fathers Egypt 80 band, decided to carve his own knish in the afrobeat world by creating the group Positive Force. Segun Damisa joined this group as a founding member, the beginning of a career that would span a decade and half.

While with Femi Kuti, Segun was opportune to play alongside musical names in the business and privileged to travel world-wide where he acquired the exposure that would serve as a propelling force at the creation of his group Alkebu-lan in 2001 after he quit Femi Kutis Positive Force, and later Afrobeat Crusaders a group he put together after moving base to Bordeaux in France 2004.

After a series of concerts in and out of Bordeaux including opening for the North American Afrobeat Orchestra Antibalas, Segun took his Afrobeat crusaders into studio to record a nine title album in February/March 2006. Recorded at Chris Birketts studio, the guitarist/producer also played guitar solo on two of the tracks. Also featured in the album is Soul Makossa impresario Manu Dibango who played his alto sax solo on the song AIDS. The album produced by the tenor sax player of the group, Pierre Henry Vulliard (aka Speedy) for Arts Sciences Information is due for release early 2007.

Despite his death, his group members are resolve to carry on where he stopped and they have the offer of Antibalas lead singer the Nigerian born Amayo, to appear whenever time permits. Amayo like Segun is a lead singer and percussionist.

Segun was a true child of Kalakuta as all the songs point out, written in the combative political spirit of Fela and afrobeat music. Added to this is his respectful, charming and warm personality. He was always ready to lend a hand to whoever stretched out their hands for help. Sometimes to his own detriment, Segun would answer present to the calls of distress from friends and folks alike. Surely we would all miss those warm smiles on his face even in difficult times.

With a hind-sight privileged as I was at his death bed, I can understand why Segun fought so desperately to beat the cancer that was slowly and painfully taking away his life. The only thing that calmed his combative soul was my promise that we all in the afrobeat family will do everything within our means to perpetrate his memory with the release of his gift to us all this beautiful and rich afrobeat album.

Tandis qu'on se prépare à marquer le dixième anniversaire de la mort du créateur et roi de l'afro-beat, Fela anikulapo-Kuti, par une grande célébration reliant pendant une semaine tous les groupes d'afro-beat à travers le monde jusqu'à l'Africa Shrine de Lagos (Nigeria), et qu'on prévoit une semaine de pèlerinages musicaux et carnavals de rue, la mort est venue à nouveau frapper aux portes de la famille de l'afro-beat. Segun Damisa , leader de l'ancien groupe d'afro-beat Alkebu-lan basé à Abuja (Nigeria) et fondateur des Afro-beat Crusaders basé à Bordeaux (France) est mort d'un cancer généralisé le 17 Juillet 2006 en France.

Segun était un enfant de Kalakuta. Il commence très jeune son apprentissage de percussionniste à la fin des années soixante-dix après s'être joint à la communauté de Fela. Il y passe la plus grande partie de sa vie d'adolescent et d'adulte, ce qui a profondément marqué sa personnalité et sa carrière de musicien. Il quitte l'entourage de Fela pour un bref intermède chez King Sunny Ade à l'époque où ce maître de la musique juju enregistre au Nigeria « Sweet Banana » et « My Dear », des albums très populaires. En 1986, Segun entre, en tant que membre fondateur, dans le groupe Positive Force créé par Femi Kuti. Ce dernier a décidé de quitter l'orchestre de son père, Egypt 80 , et de prendre son destin en main dans le monde de l'afro-beat. Pour Segun, c'est le commencement d'une carrière qui va durer une quinzaine d'années.

Avec Femi Kuti, Segun Damisa a l'opportunité de côtoyer dans les concerts des grands noms des milieux de la musique. Fort de l'expérience acquise lors de tournées à travers le monde, il décide en 2001, après avoir quitté le groupe Positive Force de Femi Kuti, de créer son propre groupe Alkebu-lan . Plus tard, en 2004, alors qu'il est basé à Bordeaux (France), il monte un nouveau groupe : les Afro-beat Crusaders.

Après une série de concerts à Bordeaux et dans sa périphérie, dont ceux prévus en première partie de l'orchestre nord-américain d'afro-beat Antibalas , Segun et ses Afrobeat Crusaders enregistrent en studio en Février/Mars 2006 un album de neuf titres. Le studio est celui de Chris Birkett, guitariste et producteur, qui joue un solo à la guitare sur une des pistes. Manu Dibango, l'impresario de Soul Makossa, participe également à cet album dans la chanson intitulée AIDS (= SIDA) en jouant un solo au saxophone alto. Produit pour Arts Sciences Information par le saxophoniste tenor du groupe, Pierre Henry Vulliard (dit Speedy), l'album doit sortir début 2007.

En dépit de la disparition de Segun Damisa, les membres de son groupe ont décidé de poursuivre ce qu'il a entrepris. Ils ont reçu l'offre du chanteur vedette d'Antibalas, Amayo (né au Nigeria) de paraître en scène à chaque occasion possible. Amayo, comme Segun, est chanteur et percussionniste.

Segun était un véritable enfant de Kalakuta, c'est ce que démontrent toutes ses chansons, écrites dans l'esprit combatif et politique de Fela et de la musique afro-beat. Ajoutons à cela sa personnalité pleine de respect, de charme et de chaleur humaine. Il était toujours disposé à prêter main forte à qui avait besoin d'aide. Parfois à son désavantage, Segun répondait présent aux appels de détresse d'amis et de proches. Assurément, son sourire, chaleureux même dans les moments difficiles, nous manquera à tous.

Reconnaissant le privilège que j'ai eu d'être à ses côtés alors qu'il était sur son lit de mort, je peux comprendre pourquoi Segun a lutté avec l'énergie du désespoir pour combattre le cancer qui lui ôtait lentement et péniblement la vie. La seule chose qui calmât son âme combative, ce fut ma promesse que nous tous de la famille afro-beat ferions tout notre possible pour perpétuer sa mémoire avec la sortie de ce cadeau qu'il nous faisait à tous ce riche et bel album d'afro-beat. .
