Selah Dubb headed into a 2009 with heavy momentum and a focused mission. After recording four albums and heavily touring the Carolinas tallying over 120 shows in 2008, this funky right and tight trio had tough shoes to fill if they were to step up the pace in 2009. Wrapping up their Spring '09 Vibe Up Tour and Summer '09 Whirlwind Tour on the most high vibes, the rock steady crew has locked down solid support from friends, fans, and communities across the Carolinas. Swinging beats stronger than ever, Selah Dubb is preparing for Fall '09 Fun Never Ends Tour and recording their upcoming album, Dubbing on the Island. On the surface, the mission of the band is to spread unity and positivity. However, if one wants to delve deeper into the lyrics, messages of equality, consciousness, and empowerment are bountiful.
Selah Dubb has embraced the capacity of steadily evolving music technology by merging stepped up drum and bass beats with their foundation of pure, rude-boy reggae roots. The resulting sound can be described as high vibrational funky reggae with a spacey soul twist. In addition to their original music, Selah Dubb fuses popular covers into their sets honoring artists like: Bob Marley, The Police, Sublime, UB40, Talking Heads, & Barrington Levy.
With a rich history spanning over 15 years, Selah Dubb has rocked audiences throughout the country and overcome innumerable challenges along the way. By consistently hashing out new songs and continuously improving their DIY formula, The Dubbsters have captured the attention of both new and dedicated fans alike. In the face of an ailing economy where most record companies are shelving acts and struggling to stay afloat, Selah has tightened up their underground approach, managing their own business to keep the music alive and in motion.
Mark Evangelist (lead vocals, guitarist, songwriter, and producer) is the leading light of the band. His passion for reggae music and his original, high energy songwriting has kept Selah thriving since its inception. By touring non-stop throughout the years and recording 12 albums, the group has developed a great reputation in the southeast and beyond. Heather “Baby Beats” Purdin, support vocals and keys, was a surprising addition to the group. Coming to North Carolina from Athens, GA she attended a Selah show in Boone and became instantly hooked. When a position in the band became available shortly after, she jumped on the opportunity. Her job in the band is not only as a keyboard melody maker but also live engineer, controlling the digital aspects of the music like that of a DJ. Peter “Popalo” Hanast, mountain drummer, is a music veteran who moved from New York to the North Carolina to enjoy a simpler kind of life. His rock reggae style is utilized both live and in the studio to get a polished, roots effect. This summer, coastal rootsman, Quazi, has joined the band to play drums on the coast and lighten Papolo's busy schedule. His solid foundation and attention to detail bring a dance quality that keeps the rhythm shaking and body moving. In the studio, Tom Higgins (owner of Dreamland Sonic Studios) brings the band's recordings to fruition with his dedication to detail, organic recording style, and creative enthusiasm.
While traveling across the USA since the band’s inception, Selah has been fortunate to share the stage opening for many of their favorite artists: The Wailers, Widespread Panic, Jimmy Cliff, Slightly Stupid, P-Funk, Steel Pulse, Train, Black Uhuru, Burning Spear, Eek-a-Mouse, Lakeside, Culture, Yellow Man, and many more.
