Anything that is not an excuse for being rude, crude, etc.
Movies
Favs would be: Amadeus, Labyrinth, Mirror Mask, Braveheart (gotta luv the kilt ;-), anything with Robin Williams or Whoopie Goldberg (Color of Purple was awesome!)
Television
Don't watch it much . . . it's called the "idiot box" for a reason . . . I become a blithering idiot if I sit in front of it. And I know it's also called the "boob tube", but quite frankly, never did a thing for those ;-) However . . .
Through Mina's Eyes . . . 7 yr old budding photographer . . .
Books
"Who Moved My Cheese" . . . hmmm . . . might be time for a review of this little classic :-S
Anything by Anne Rice (of course : ) . . . otherwise nothing special overall!
Heroes
Personal Heroes would be:
My Mother -- Nope. She didn't do everything "correct" raising a passel of brats (7 of us to be exact), however she taught me a lot about perseverance and how to fight for what you believe in.
My Grandmother -- Following my grandfather's passing when she was about 40 yrs old, she chose to stay a single-parent back when it was SOOOooooo not the popular thing to do. She taught me that a woman is capable of anything she sets her mind to, which included raising 3 kids and opening a business of her own to support them.
My Aunt -- Only got one of these and she taught me about options and choices in Life.
Life -- I've learned that there is a reason for everything and everyone in our lives. That even friends are transitory; nothing is static forever . . . that things and people pass through our lives on an as-needed basis; some being able to stay longer than others . . . some for an hour, some for years, and that we need to enjoy these things and people as though we may not see them tomorrow.
Selayma has Holiday Workshops coming up at Fruitridge Recreation Center in Sacto! "Become One with Your Veil" and "Sword Dancing: 101 - Back to some Basics!"
Where I'm From: I am a transplant from California via Ohio to Colorado and very, VEry shortly here, I will be on my way back to California. It's been 12 yrs since I left, and it's gonna be really weird going back. I LUV Colorado! But the more I've been adjusting to this idea of returning 'home', the more I recognize that there are things I still luv about Cali as well :) Not to mention that I get to spend time with the other half of the grandkids and my oldest daughter! Should be an interesting ride!
Me and BD'ing: I've been performing for 25+ yrs now, and teaching just about as long in some capacity. I host the annual "Shimmy for the Cure! Colorado" fundraiser in June, for breast cancer as well as the pre-fundraiser "BOO Fest", in October. I plan ..ing up a Shimmy in Cali as well, so keep an eye out for more info ... and let me know if you'd like to be added to the email list.
I plan on teaching and performing once I get back to Cali, of course. And I will be looking for a couple of students/dancers that would be interested in performing with me as "Baptism by Fire!", and in particular on a new project that I'd like to develop! Should be fun :-D
Since I left Cali, I've been to 13 states dancing, teaching, taking workshops, camping, etc. Really kinda cool to see how different regions present belly dancing, in stylization variances, costuming and of course, pricing : )
What I Do: Well . . . at the moment . . . not a whole lotta anything! Although I have a couple of contacts made re: teaching in Sacra-Tomato already, so I'm anticipating getting "back to work" as far as dancing goes rather quickly. I will also be back at the El Morocco down in the Bay Area, in some capacity again, too :-D Very excited about that!
I am available for private/coaching classes, as well as workshops . . . Sword is a particular favorite of mine, as well as developing a "folkloric" stylization that I've been working on for a few years now. And I have yet another project that I currently have in the works ... more to come :-D
Fam Stuff: Got two daughters and six grandkids . . . three in Cali; three in Colo . . . they're matched sets :-D Got a dog named Queen of Sheba, and a snaked named Manal.
Likes/Dislikes: I HATE exercise, which is why I like belly dancing so much . . . I can trick myself into believing that I'm not working out, and just having a great time! Yes, I'm lazy that way :-D
I like to ride my bike . . . the motorized version vs pedal-powered (did I tell you I'm really lazy???) . . . can't believe it took me 36 years to get my lazy butt outta California to start with :-D
Who I'd like to meet: People. All kinds of people. People always amaze me. I am a "people watcher". They do really cool things; and they do really stupid things . . . but then, we all do : )
Just stopping by to say I hope you have a wonderful weekend. This pictures so gross... Just a reminder to not put your helmet on after you have been drinking!
