Though this is a one-person show (& that person is a man), various & sundry demons return every week to haunt the host.
Influences
The 19th century, cold pizza, cold fusion, people who used to worship Morrissey but now are a little embarrassed about the poetry they were writing at the time, debates about gun control, teenaged girls daydreaming about JD Salinger & vice-versa, Jerry Orbach as Lenny Briscoe on television's "Law & Order," broken bottles on loading docks, the generous Chinese scientists who are working on a cure for shaving, online dating, second cousins twice removed, catchy advertisement jingles from my childhood which will stay with me longer than anything I learned in college, the Free Cheese For Non-Sectarian Holidays movement, freakanomics, a tiny little square box that holds yards & yards of floss, a dogeared copy of the 2003 Halliwell's Film Guide with all the movies I've seen marked-up with a yellow highlighter, movies I'll never see, musical instruments I'll never play, the sour smell of disappointment inside every high school locker room, official documents, the statistically understandable failure of twelve-step programs, using cotton as clouds on posterboard mock-up of our beautiful lives, flirting, the memory of being able to "go outside & play," people who don't lie to themselves very well so they put a lot of stickers on the back of their cars, dentists, apologists for resentment & rue, Edgar & Allan but not Poe, health scares, inserting words like "fungible" in conversation even if I don't know what they mean because they seem to fit at the time, Kali (on her good days), lip reading, opiates, qualms & waiting for my eyes to get weaker so I can get glasses in under an hour.
Sounds Like
No other radio show you've ever head! Every other radio show you've never heard! Freedom! Dogma! Revolution! Bingo! Sit down! Shut up! Yippee skippee! Ahroooooo!
Self Help Radio is a forty-year-old radio show that was on the radio in Austin from 2002 to 2008. Asteroid time is now click click boop. When it left the radio, it became a wandering podcast, looking for another radio to be its friend in the cold, cold world.
Your host is named Gary & has been so since shortly after his first day of the second grade. Before that there were serious debates about his right to live. He is specifically known for having astonishing taste in music as well as being a more than capable fretter. His lives in seclusion, only coming out to forage & make radio.
The show itself is not a self help radio show. Get it? The words in that sentence aren't capitalized. Self Help Radio is capitalized. So it IS a Self Help Radio show - in fact it is THE Self Help Radio show - but it's not a self help radio show. Anyway, the premise is banal: there's a theme, there's a lot of songs of very different genres & time lengths about that theme, & there's a problem child talking roughly every four or five songs. The show lends itself to drinking games, long romantic drives to liquor stores, "Happy Days"-style dance contests, musical snobbery, gender studies, the war on sailing & other traditions newly created by people who never came from "the old country." Also, hearts are broken every damn time.
New podcasts appear with clumsy regularly every Saturday, sometime in the afternoon if you want to get particular. They will be handsomely packaged for your mp3 reader with a bow on it at selfhelpradio.net. As usual, themes are discussed as if they fucking matter over at selfhelpradio.blogspot.com. You will need no previous experience in podcasts or radio to enjoy. You just need to be able to look yourself squarely in the jaw & say, "Yes I can!"

Appena sarà tutto pronto ti faremo sapere.
Felice Anno Nuovo. Dio ti benedica ancora, grazie. Suonate il blues p
