Self-Help: The Comedy, a ninety minute fast paced, two-woman show, follows the journey of Starshine, a middle aged, insecure, loveable bumbler, who can’t seem to achieve anything. As she desperately tries to complete her training in the Venus Goldfarb Goddess Workshop, she will learn how to get some self-esteem, how to be worshipped like a love goddess, and she will then, and only then, become a seminar leader, a goal she’s been trying to hit for 72 seminars! This is her big night—there’s a lot at stake!
Starshine is led through an obstacle course of self-empowerment by her ego-maniacal mentor, Venus Goldfarb, and a parade of outrageous motivational speakers, all of whom are book-promoting, merchandise hawking, snake-oil selling women, who will somehow actually impart real gems of wisdom, and advance her journey. All nine unique characters are hilariously portrayed by two gifted actors--bedazzling us as they come and go with their lightening fast costume changes. Their characters enrapture us with their quick wit and slick advice.
On her zany journey, Starshine meditates, affirms, embraces and learns, while we all laugh riotously at the over-blown self-help obsession that’s sweeping our nation, emptying our wallets and empowering all the wrong people. And yet through all the hilarity, there is an inspirational message for all.
By the end of the evening Starshine will complete her training, achieve her goals and become a seminar leader--or will she?
Hey there. Thought I'd give you a holler since I'm going to be at Rascals Comedy Club in Montclair this week, April 12-15. I haven't been to NJ in a while. Well, actually that's not true. I was there last week to buy something at the giant Ikea store. I got a little lost in there and they had to send out a rescue team to find me. Just 676 more parts to go and the three-shelf bookcase I bought will be done! All that hard work was well worth the $3 in savings. And speaking of NJ, I just did an interview with The Jersey Toddshow, a podcast by a NJ lawyer with a warped sense of reality. Now I used to be a lawyer and Todd wishes he was a comedian, so you can imagine what kind of conversation we had. Better yet, check it out for yourself at here. Hope you can catch a show! – Paul
