   About The Selfish Gene
deb50530994ac7cbdd6e82f90abfe551
Based in Madison, WI, The Selfish Gene plays their own brand of three-piece transaccidental guitar rock a la Built to Spill, Modest Mouse and Pavement. The band's members consist of Matt Allen (guitar, lead vocals), Eric Andraska (bass, vocals) and Rob Young (drums).

The Selfish Gene’s last album, The Grand Masquerade, garnered considerable attention from music critics around the nation. In addition to a nationally published review in Performing Songwriter magazine, the band was featured as Artist of the Day on Spin.com and National Public Radio, and received dozens of online reviews at such popular sites as Paste and VH1’s Best Week Ever.

They've shared the stage with Bon Iver, Kings of Leon, Califone, Cloud Cult, The Von Bondies, Waco Brothers, Ha Ha Tonka, Lovedrug, Straylight Run and The Redwalls. The Selfish Gene was also featured by Triple-M radio at the 2007 and 2008 SoCo Music Experience festivals, playing alongside such progressive artists as The Flaming Lips, Cold War Kids, The Black Keys and The Roots.

The band has spent much of 2009 developing new material for their eagerly anticipated follow-up to Masquerade; recording is slated near the end of Fall. In between that they've managed to hit the local and nearby Minneapolis and Chicago clubs consistently, as well as throwing in performances at Madison's own Memorial Union Terrace and Art Fair on the Square.

"Songs that are both delicately introspective and explosively grand." - National Public Radio

"Like how a gene is rich with assorted genetic materials, the band’s sound is a composite of influences ranging as far back as ELO to the more modern Spoon." - SPIN.com

"If you like Spoon, you might dig this new band The Selfish Gene." - VH1's Best Week Ever

"A memorable album that has more smarts, soul and just plain fun than most of what's considered "pop" these days." - Wisconsin State Journal

“The Selfish Gene unfurls a wave of melodic indie pop – think Spoon, Cloud Cult and Okkervil River – that’s sure to light up the stage.” - The Isthmus

we're back in Madison at The Frequency on Wed. July 22nd at 10pm!

our friend Matt says we're like Jellyfish performing a Satanic Majesty's request for a fuzz pedal cabaret or Queen melting in lava while Kenneth Anger films the whole ordeal in a lurid over exposed 8mm. our friend Corby says we're as inspired by Tim Burton as anything else, all Pee-Wee's Big Adventure goes to hell, all Beetlejuiced out. we say at least it's music, and everyone could use a good show. come see us!

Wed. July 22nd at The Frequency at 10pm with Underculture and Full Vinyl Treatment!

What's up?

Just stopping by to show some love :-)

We appreciate that you're doing your own thing and glad that you're our friend!

I wanted to share an insight that I had recently. Blood Root Mother really believe in the power of music. Genuine music transcends all limitations and boundaries, and happens when musicians and listeners are communicating with one another on the deepest level possible. In a society overcome by an obsession with flashy images and stale radio hits, we seek to do something that shakes the foundation of the status quo. Since the dawn of human civilization, music has been about sharing humanity and truly connecting with others. So stay connected with us, and join us on our journey.

Peace,
Elliot

The artistic activity does not lie in art itself as such. It penetrates into a deeper world in which all art forms flow together, and in which the harmony of soul and cosmos in the nothing has its outcome in reality.
