Self Made Men are a disorganized conglomerate of working class stooges. Front man Jon Roy is a 25 year veteran in the San Diego Ska community. Jon played for many local and international bands including: The English Beat, OMD, Color Blind, Donkey Show, The Big Express, Spy Kids, Gangbusters, Unsteady, Windsor Hill Steppers, and now The Self Made Men.
After the unfortunate death of a Ska bass corner-stone, David Fuentes, Jon hooked up with Lex and both decided to reignite their flame for Ska music. Lex moved back from Northern California in 2003 where he played sax for No Crime Zone and The Steady Ups. In 2005 he joined Rice Rokit for two years, another San Diego based band. Jon and Lex recruited Thom Brown (aka Jett Brown), pub crawler and guitarist extraordinaire formerly of Unsteady and other great San Diego bands. They added super-star trumpet player Chris Lafave who also plays with The Lifters and formerly played hockey for the Detroit Red Wings. They then added long time L.A. based reggae drummer Ryan (Mr. Ras) who drummed for L.A. based bands: The Maroons, The Soul Fools, The Effen Wineoz, Noise, Idren, and The Bashments. Local fisherman Jah Josh jumped over form his other band, The Optimators, to play keys for SMM. The final piece was pinch-hitter Branden Butler on trombone formally of The Maroons and many jazz ensembles. Recently Branden opted out of the band for the bar exams. Study on school boy!
The Self Made Men have been very busy recording and playing live shows throughout Southern California. They have played with bands The English Beat, The Slackers, The Chris Murray Combo, See Spot, and many others. More to come from the sandy city where the sun shines for shady people.
