poems, mothers, relationships, paint, sculpture, installations, free jazz, teaching, learning, film, softness, anger, accountability, books, conversations, and fun things too like beachballs, breakfast, and kites...and as far as actual songwriters go...well, it's a long list for sure but let's say bono, elvis costello, nick drake, leonard cohen, adam duritz, aimee mann, elliott smith, michael stipe, iron and wine, suzanne vega, ani difranco, teitur, regina spektor, sting... incredible contemporary songwriter peers like mike bloom, adam mugavero, and neil cavanagh, my old band surreal...the independent songwriters on the web and in the world and on the street and in cafes, the subway music of daniel carter, the production ear of brian blackburn, the work ethic of phil jimenez, the armenian duduk (which is the saddest instrument in the world for sure), more more more...
Alan Semerdjian is ready to release a new batch of songs with the right record label or licensing/distribution company. He has played over 900 shows in the last dozen years or so, placed his music in tv and film, played on wfuv (his favorite radio station - thank you, John P.), charted on cmj, and earned the respect of lots of critics and fans along the way. After several years of performing in alternative/indie/experimental rock bands, he self-released "When There Was Something Wrong With You" in 2005 and traveled across the country on three separate mini-tours to support it. His new collection of songs (tentatively called "The Big Beauty" and produced by Mike Bloom of Rilo Kiley and The Elected) is his most accessible work to date and features an incredible bunch of musicians, friends, and special guests who come together to create a sweet kind of semipop indiefolk acoustic rock music that is both intimate and playful, hauntingly poetic, spirited, and uniquely unforgettable.
ALAN SEMERDJIAN: When There Was Something Wrong With You
"When There Was Something Wrong With You" is a catalogue of acoustic-driven moody and sonic indie-rock songs by the NYC and Long Island singer/songwriter and poet.
When there was something wrong is a great song...I think you guys captured the emotion of what you wanted perfectly...good luck with the CD and I'll see you at one of your LR shows!
Hey Alan, I'm planning on coming down to your residency at least one of the nights. Amanda will be in class, but hopefully we'll all meet up soon as well. -Matt
Love the new tunes. Sorry we didn't get to do the reunion gig with you guys. Hope you'll do another sometime. Thanks for doing it for Dana Farber, btw - they saved my dad's life a few months back. Can't wait for the new disc.
