The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri's Interests
General
Pet of the Week for 4/22/09---I wanted to tell you a little bit about this wonderful puppy! Shelbie is about 11 weeks old now and she is great with kids. She went to the ABC Babies and more Expo with us. She is very gentle and tolerant of children. She will be a large dog and her coat will need a little bit of care over time, especially in the summer so that she doesn't get too hot.
I visited with Shelbie today and she is a little shy in the kennel environment, but given the chance all she wants is to lay her head on your chest and enjoy the attention that is given to her. If you like large dogs, Shelbie is one of those treasures that you don't want to miss out on! She will be an excellent family dog! Please come and see her at the shelter! Shelbie is available for adoption at The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri, 573-334-5837 Mon.-Sat. 11am-5pm, Sun. 1-4pm.
FEATURED ALUMNI: Sissy, adopted by Steve Glastetter
Sissy is a sweetie...a great companion! She loves attention and gets lots of it. She likes playing with her toys and enjoys laying in your lap. I adopted Sissy from the Humane Society and I'm glad I found her there. She is a great addition to the family.

Tips for avoiding Puppy Mills
The majority of the population did not even know such a thing as a Puppy Mill existed until the media exposure kicked off by Oprah's Puppy Mill show shined some light on these dark, horrible places. The state of Missouri is the leading supplier of puppies from puppy mills. Yes, once again, not one of Missouri's highlights. The best way to help fight against puppy mills is to be informed before you buy a puppy. Here are a few steps that you can take when considering a new family pet:
1. First, please consider adoption first. There are thousands of good dogs euthenized every week across our country because there is no place for them in the overcrowded shelters. Visit your local humane society or other shelters frequently and select the right puppy or dog that is suited to you. Every puppy purchased from a pet store or puppy mill means that another dog in a shelter looses his life.
2. If you feel that you must buy a dog, find a responsible breeder. Always visit the premises and see the parents where they are raised. Make sure that they are being cared for in a healthy and adequate environment. Never take the breeder at their word, seeing is the only proof you will have.
3. Beware of newspaper and online adds. Once again, make sure that you see the premises and the parents of the puppy that you are considering buying.
4. Avoid "rescuing" a puppy by paying money for him/her from a breeder. There are a lot of breeders that will sell their puppies that don't get sold to individuals and pet stores on the side of the road, in front of businesses, and at flea markets. If you see this occuring, please call your local authority and report the activity. It more than likely will not get them fined or in trouble, but it will run them off at least. You do not want to "rescue" a puppy in this manner because it puts money into the breeders pocket and opens up a space for more puppies. The cycle keeps repeating and never ends. This is a very difficult thing to do, but these puppies are too easily replaced.
5. Buying from a Pet Store almost always guarantees that the puppies came from a puppy mill. Their bottom line is money from the sale just like that of the breeder at the puppy mill. Avoid buying a puppy that you cannot trace its origins to see the premise and parents.
The best way to add a furry friend to your family is to adopt from the local humane society or shelter. For more tips on helping to stop puppy mills, visit www.stoppuppymills.org. You can also find more buying tips and a link to visit the USDA's Hall of Shame for Puppy Mills. There is also a lot of good infomation on the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legistlation's web site, www.maal.org.

Books
It's not a book, but a lens! I just joined Squidoo and I am trying to get us listed as one of their charities. Below is a link to my first lens about the Humane Society. Since MySpace doesn't like to allow links outside of myspace, you can go to www.squidoo.com/humanesocietyofsemo to get to it also. There are products that you can purchase through Amazon on my lens and I am giving all of the proceeds to the shelter. I placed things on there like Frontline, K9 Advantix, the Furminator, Caesar's Way, and a few others. You can also rate the page by clicking on the stars under he title and I have also included a poll on Breed Specific Legislation if you would like to vote on the topic there. Please check it out if you like. Are you a Squidooer too?
Heroes
Our biggest Heroes are the generous supporters of the Humane Society of SEMO. Without them, we would not be able to provide for all of the animals that we do. Our other heroes are the Staff of the Humane Society of SEMO, all of our volunteers, people that spay and neuter their animals, and others like Mahatma Gandhi, Caesar Milan, Bob Barker, and Pet Lovers everywhere!

The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri takes in approximately 5,000 animals a year. In order to care for this many animals, we rely on the generosity of our community. We raise money through events, fundraisers, donations, and membership drives. We hold educational workshops like our recent Petfinder seminar and our Adoption Mobiles to name a couple. In addition, we have a Volunteer Program, Spay and Neuter Assistance Program, we hold Spay Day occassionally, and we have membership meetings for our members to get to know more about us and share their love for animals and ideas. If you would like to become a part of our team please visit the shelter or our website, www.semopets.org . There you will find the latest updates on events, how to become a member, more information about donations, and how to apply to become a volunteer. The staff and all of our animals deeply appreciate all that you do for us. Thank you!

To understand and broaden awareness of animal and community needs and our role in meeting those needs.
To attract, retain and develop capable, caring and professional staff, paid and unpaid, to achieve our mission.

S.N.A.P.--Spay and Neuter Assistance Program
The Humane Society of SEMO strongly supports spaying and neutering of pets in order to help control pet overpopulation. It saves lives and has many health benefits for your pet. In efforts to help obtain this goal, the Humane Society of SEMO has a Spay and Neuter Assistance Program. It is income based and you must submit an application and provide proof of income to the shelter. You can either get the application by visiting us, call and have it mailed to you, or you can download them directly from out website, www.semopets.org. If approved, the cost to you will be $15 per animal, limit of two animals per household. Please be responsible and help us achieve our goal of reducing pet overpopulation. There really aren't enough good homes for all the animals.
Who I'd like to meet: The HSSemo would like to meet fellow animal lovers and people that would like to volunteer to make a difference in our animals lives. We strive to educate and relay our mission to everyone that we come into contact with. We have several social networking sites that we interact with friends such as Facebook, YourCause, Bebo, Petfinder, and here on MySpace. We have our own website as well, www.semopets.org . Please visit our website for the latest updates and events. If you would like to view some of our animals for adoption, you can also visit us on Petfinder.com.
Free ways to help the
Humane Society of Southeast Missouri
Here are a few of the ways to help the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri without costing you extra cash! With today's economy it is very important to make all of your money go further and even more importantly, other people's money can work for your charity.
1. Pick up a Schnuck's eScrip Community Card at Schnuck's or at the HSSemo. Once you call the toll free number to activate the card, tell them that you support the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri, have the cashier scan your card each time you shop before you pay for groceries. Schnuck's donates 3% of your purchases to us! You can even contact shelter by email or phone and we take your information, activate your card for you, and mail it to you! How much easier can that get?
2. Participate in community contribution events like our upcoming Texas Roadhouse Charity Day on Dec. 11th and Jan. 8th. Each month we will post a new flyer as a link on our website that you can download and present to your server on that particular night. Texas Roadhouse will then donate 10% of your check to us! We also dine with Fazoli’s on December 11th – December 17th, 2008, for a 15% donation of your check. There are also a couple of nights, Tuesday and Wednesday, at the Jackson Bowling Alley that you can donate part of your check to us as well.
3. Remember to use GoodShop.com when you are Christmas shopping or buying other gifts online this year! GoodShop has hundreds of well known stores that have partnered to donate a percentage to your charity. Designate us as your charity each time you shop through this link to raise money for your charity without costing you extra! It directs you to the stores actual site for secure shopping. Great way to make the other companies' money work for you!
4. Use GoodSearch.com to search the web! This is a Yahoo powered search that donates a penny per web search that you do to us if you designate us as your charity. Another great source of free money! There is even a handy toolbar to download to your Internet Explorer and others. It's easy to use and works great. I use mine everyday!
5. Participate in contests that offer grants for the most votes/participation. A couple of the most recent ones that I have posted are through Care2 and through the Animal Rescue Site in which we tried to accumulate votes for $10,000 grants. A current one that we are trying to get participation for is on replyforall.com, which I found through Facebook! You sign up with them and add a signature to your Yahoo or Gmail account and as you email it tracks your impact and the impact of the friends that you invite to help as well. It also says that we could receive funds from it's sponsors for accumulating participation. Still working on all this, but every little bit helps.
6. Become a Volunteer is another great way to help us! If you have some spare time and would like to work on events, fundraising, dog and cat socialization, photographing animals for Petfinder.com, distributing information and flyers, etc., it is a tremendous help to us and our animals. In order to volunteer you must fill out an application that can be gotten off of our website, www.semopets.org, and attend a short orientation seminiar with our Volunteer Coordinator, Tressa Watson. You can also email Tressa at volunteer@semopets.org if you have any questions about volunteering. Your help is much appreciated!
7. As I mentioned briefly before, eScrip is another site that uses sponsors and partners to raise money for us. Go to eScrip.com and create an account. If you shop online at Macy's with a Macy's credit card you can utilize this site as well as other stores. There are others like Schnuck's instore shopping. There are more options coming to this site each month because they are still expanding. They are working on a dinning rewards program as well. I am working on trying to get Macy's to be an instore participant as well. Wish me luck!
8. Donate your old blankets and towels to the shelter to use as bedding for our animals. One idea is to cut an old comforter into two to four parts, sew the edges, and you've got several warm dog beds.
9. Donate your gently used items that you want to clean out of your house to our annual yard sale. Usually at the beginning of May we have a yard sale at the shelter. "One man's junk is another man's treasure!" Your donated items could raise money for the homeless animals.
10. Take your aluminum cans to Sides Metal Recycling and tell them you want to donate the money from the cans to the HSSemo. They will send us the money. Do something for the environment and help the homeless animals of our community. That's pretty cool!
11. Bring your empty printer cartridges from HP, Cannon, or Epson (those that have the printer head on them) to the shelter. We can recycle these for rewards at Staples!! It really helps out a lot with office supplies.
12. One of the most important things that you can help with that is free is to talk with people and to share this list with friends and family. Talk to them about all the things that can be done. Email them and ask them to pass the email on to their friends and relatives as well. Ask them to use GoodSearch and GoodShop, or to save their ink cartridges to be turned in, or to get the Schnuck’s Community Card to use for the Humane Society. It is a matter of getting the participation to make these things successful.
I know I will think of several other things after I wrap up this list. If you can think of any that we could use to help raise money in addition to these, please give us your suggestions and ideas. Thank you very much!
I adopted (Tues.) one of the Pit Bull mix puppies that you have. OMG!! She is the greatest little dog!!! She is sooooooooo smart!!! You were thinking that they were about 7-8 weeks old. Believe it or not, this puppy has only had one accident in my floor so far. She has already figured out to go to the door and whine and we will take her outside. I've never seen a puppy this young do such a thing!! I wanted to let you know so that you would be able to tell people something about them. We just LOVE her!!! I'll post a pic soon. Thanks sooooooo much!!!
Thank you so much for adding us. It is people like you that can truly make a difference. New York City has started their round up of 2,000 Canada geese to send to the gas chambers. 340 have been killed so far. Please visit our page to find out what you can do to help...thank you!
Thanks for the add! I adopted a beagle dachsund mix from you almost 11 yrs ago...he's in my pics...Tommy dog. I couldn't have asked for more. He's the love of my life!

Cheryle and Brandie, Thank you so much for taking such good care of the arrangements for Casey. With the vet not knowing what happened, we at least had some comfort in having him back with us in a day. You will never know how much that meant to us. Love and puppy kisses to you both!! H.S.
