| About Semothy Jones (Music Producer) |
Causing quite a stir with his work with Plan B and Frisco, WE catch up with hot production property Sem for a chat and a Red Berry smoothie...
Considering he was put on by close friend Ben Drew aka Plan B, it’s only right that we meet beat constructor Sem at the 679 headquarters in Camden. As well as crafting hits, Sem also lends a hand to proceedings with an aim to learn the game and one day to hopefully, “set up my own label.” However, three seconds into our interview, we’re chucked out so a meeting can go ahead. “I’m obviously not important enough,” Sem laughs, as we head for a nearby café. Regardless of his self-evaluation, artists such as Pro Green, Wiley and Frisco would disagree with his appraisal. Big Frisc is a particular fan, with Sem concocting the police-siren heavy production for Back 2 Da Lab Vol. 2 (track 7 you dun know!), which has got the RWD office going nuts. And when you consider it took the Holloway native only five minutes to create the 192 second banger, you realise this guy must be pretty special behind the boards.
It’s not exactly a 32-track that he is constantly perched behind, but a more humble studio setup, says Sem. “I make my music at home. I’ve got some budget PC, but I make it work it’s arse off. I’ve got a midi controller keyboard, a soundcard and some battered hi-fi speakers from my friend... It’s minimal but as long as I get my sounds right, it’s cool.” So how exactly does he get his sounds right? “Well I got a ‘special’ copy of Reason,” he laughs. “I studied the programme, I know it inside out. I study producers as well; I’ll listen to the arrangement of a track and rebuild it from scratch.”
When you’re putting the work in like that, it’s no wonder that a pre-679 signed Plan B asked Sem who now has, ‘over a 1000 beats sitting indoors’ to help him out with a mixtape he was putting together. Fast forward a couple of years and the tracks they composed have finally seen the light of day on Bizzle’s underground release Paint It Blacker - including the dark yet delightful Suzanne.
After hearing his work with the Forest Gate rhymer as well as his Delivery Boy mixtape series, others came calling; Doctor, Crazy Titch, Goldielocks, and Jay-Z’s Def Jam darling, Lady Sovereign. “For Sov I got told that she’d just spent 10 days in the studio with Pharrell and nothing happened, so her people were hoping that maybe I could save the day, which is a big ego-boost.” Listing Sway, Ty, Donaeo, Lupe Fiasco, Shameless, Dizzee and Ghetto, Sem claims he would be just as comfortable working with artists such as Fallout Boy as he would a Plan B. Speaking of Plan B, we bump into him as we leave the café. “Oh so you think you’re some f*cking star now?” jokes Bizzle when Sem tells him he’s just done a RWD interview. Well if he carries on the way he’s started, he just may well be.
