Dr Ursula Stephens was elected to the Australian Senate for NSW in 2001. Following the 2007 Federal election, Dr Stephens was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector and Parliamentary Secretary Assisting the Prime Minister for Social Inclusion.
Prior to this appointment, Dr Stephens held a range or positions as a Shadow Parliamentary Secretary. These included Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Opposition (Social and Community Affairs), Science and Water and Regional Development.
Dr Stephens has been a member of the ALP since 1975 and has held various senior positions within the Party, including President of the NSW Branch 2001-2006. Prior to entering Parliament, Dr Stephens was an educator for 20 years, teaching in primary and secondary schools and at TAFE. This included living and teaching in the Northern Territory for two years.
Following her teaching career, Dr Stephens ran her own executive development and training business for five years and following this joined the NSW Premier's Department, working on strategic projects.
Dr Stephens has been Chair of the Rural Communities Consultative Council, a member of the NSW Rural Assistance Authority, a member of the NSW Board of Vocational Education and Training and Deputy Chair of the NSW Women's Advisory Council. Dr Stephens has a PhD in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Education.
Dr Stephens was born in Wicklow Ireland, and came to Australia when she was 7 years old. In her spare time Dr Stephens enjoys motorcycle riding, folk music, environmental issues and adult and community education. She lives in Goulburn NSW with her husband Bob and has four adult children.
