What is the cause? Fighting Malaria. Most people have heard of Malaria, but most don't know the details. Malaria is a disease caused by microscopic parasites that multiply in your red blood cells. When infected, the symptoms are similar to the flu. However, Malaria can not be recovered from quite as easily. Many cases lead to coma and death. Children are at the highest risk of death from Malaria, and they represent an overwhelmingly large portion of deaths from the disease.
Malaria has been recognized as an endemic in several parts of the world. This means that without any help, the disease is not going anywhere and rather it will spread even further. Approximately 400 million people are infected with Malaria each year. The number of resulting deaths from these infections are such that a person dies from the disease every 30 seconds. As you read this text, several people will have died from Malaria.
In addition to being a disease that can take lives, Malaria can also have the effect of economic suppression in the areas that are affected the most. This is caused by the high cost of the medicine that is used to treat it. Millions are spent simply trying to fight the disease off, and little is left to proactively prevent it from infecting others. This is money that could otherwise be used to build infrastructures and organizations that would progress entire nations. Instead these nations are left behind, and find themselves in deeper poverty from fighting a losing battle with Malaria.
But we can help. The parasite that causes Malaria is carried from host to host by mosquitoes. The Anopheles mosquitoes that are the leading cause of infection only come out at night. They search for meals beginning around dusk and continue through the rest of the night. This means that it is possible for a population to protect themselves from the mosquitoes without disrupting the daily activities that are necessary for survival (and social progress). Populations can protect themselves through the use of bed nets that are hung above their beds. These nets are proving to be very effective in preventing new infections of Malaria.
TheBuzzKill represents an effort to effectively end Malaria. That's an ambitious goal, and it is the ideal, but at the least, we want to round up enough folks to put a serious dent in the effect of Malaria in the world. This MySpace profile will serve as a hub and gathering place for all of us to connect with each other and find ways to help in this fight.
