a band that can get away with channeling Dexy’s Midnight Runners...
With only a self-titled EP to their name and a string of local shows with such fellow sunny rockers as Dinosaur Feathers and pow wow! (both EF faves), the Señors – Graham, Matt, and Vlad – are slowly carving out their own happy place amidst the concrete and frowns of the borough. Their sound recalls Bombadil’s homespun eccentricity as much as it does the otherworldly glam of Kevin Barnes and Of Montreal, which is to say their music runs the same sort of wide gamut their name implies…unless you come across French men who refer to themselves as señors on a regular basis?
So The Señors of Marseille is one of their latest releases. Most of their stuff has a similar easy going pop feel. Davey is a more uptempo song than what’s been coming out of Holiday Records lately and I was pleasantly surprised to hear this song from them. I wish I could tell you more about the band. I don’t know much. I know they’re from New York and that’s about it. But that’s OK, it never hurts to have some mystery in pop music right?"
"Track of the Week: Holiday Records has done a good job of rounding up a bunch of the new generation of lo-fi bands, The Drums, Surfer Blood, and more, and the latest is The Señors of Marseille. I got this in an e-mail late last night that I think was meant for someone else, but every once in a while fortune shines down and gives you a nugget. This tune is a rollicking good time, not quite in step with all the other acts on Holiday Records, but absolutely worthy of your attention anyway. It's a little more pop (thanks to the piano and vocal harmonies) but in a very, very good way. Check it..
"the music hums with the sun-splash jangle of California, with a hint of dark-art New York bubbling below the surface. In short, it's a sound accessible for every music lover."
