Who I'd like to meet:

AKA SENSORY PROJECTS label releases:
MYSTERY TWIN- 'Mystery Twin'(SRP072) 'Mystery Twin' is a trip, transcending from the footpath, through unmown grass carpets, rising through cheek-pink and spring-blue skies, interconnecting with cul-de-sac's of forest, sky, and technicolour pastures. Cailan Burns (aka Mystery Twin) moves postureless, pop-infused sounds from the sleepy confines of the bedroom, out the window and into the playful breezes of autumn. Shimmering with sugary neon and the wildly coloured opaques of our imaginations, the debut album from Mystery Twin infuses pop electronics with Moog guitars, a landscape of glittering diamonds, and retro-electro-acoustics with buttery vocals sung in foreign tongues. 'Mystery Twin' is the prize derived from eight years of Cailan toiling away in bedrooms, dens, and studios. 'Mystery Twin' floats and turns, it's 13 tracks melding with the same resonant aesthetic of Tujiko Noriko, Boards of Canada, Qua's Painting Monsters On Clouds, and Cailan's best known musical project to date, Pretty Boy Crossover. The finished tunes incorporate the myriad of sound, animation, and humanity which fill his astounding illustrations. Musical collaborators on 'Mystery Twin' include Cailan's wife Yoshie on vocals, QUA aka Cornel Wilczek, and John Lee aka Mountains In The Sky. 'Mystery Twin' was tweaked and mixed by Cailan and Lee, and mastered with exceptional flair by Wilczek at his Electric Dreams studio in Melbourne.
THE ANCIENTS- 'The Ancients 2'(SRP068)
In-stores now, on sale forever, on your mind today, is the brand new album by The Ancients. Entitled, ‘The Ancients 2’, the brand new album by The Ancients (Jon Michell, Mark Rodda, Raquel Solier, & Georgina Ward) is a pop epiphany and worth the three year wait. Released by Sensory Projects (MUM SMOKES, Rat Vs Possum, Love Connection, Great Earthquake, White Woods, Faux Pas and much much more..), ‘The Ancients 2’ follows up the self-titled debut album by The Ancients, released by UK label Moteer in 2009. ‘The Ancients 2’ is the first release featuring Jon Michell and the amazing band whom he recruited back in 2008. The album is a dazzling cascade of guitar motifs, textural pools, and rhythmic delights with a surreal lyrical feel that rewards close and repeated listening. Recorded by Julian Patterson (Mum Smokes/Minimum Chips) and The Ancients, and mastered by Casey Rice (Tortoise, The Dirty Three, MUM SMOKES..) the album is also wise, playful, lyrically surreal and irrevocably memorable. From the neo-pop of 'Street Funk' to the glazed highway folk of 'The Rambler', 'The Ancients 2' never falters.

WHITE WOODS- 'Bellplay'(SRP064)
“‘This is so fucking good. Melbourne’s White Woods are doing a kind of drugged out garage sound that is so familiar, but somehow highly unique. The album is a huge journey through all kinds of garage/psych, shoegaze, and even no-wave-jam kinda paradises. I’ve only had a couple of listens and I already know I’m going to be playing this all year.’ Fridaynightmusicclub.com 'Taking lo-fi to a new, erm, low, Melbourne-via-Hobart band White Woods recorded their debut to (quarter) inch tape but unlike many of their peers doing the fashionable analog thing, Bellplay doesn't sound like it's been cleaned up digitally afterwards. The sound is raw, muddy and slightly sinister fuzzy garage, with a nod to the poppiness of New Zealand label Flying Nun. Album opener Ballet Tea sets the tone with the vocals - shared by guitarist Patrick Breen and keyboard player Kelly Brown - half-buried underneath layers of woozy discordant guitars and horns. Each track sounds more tripped-out jam than tightly rehearsed songs of determined length. Sea Sickened features Breen's vocals and Nikki Sudden/Gang Of Four-style white noise before February Kind takes a narcotic turn, channelling Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized. Now Is Not a Time and Elbows and Kneebones are the most poppy - albeit dirty - tracks, and Groundswell evokes a Laughing Clowns-meets-Flying Nun feel, before this brilliant debut culminates in the monged-out, droning psychedelia of Backyard Blues. Best new band of the year contenders, for sure'. ****1/2 Kylie Northover - The Age '..all the fashionable influences are present and correct here - early Flying Nun, British post-punk, raw production values - but it all fuses together to form a wonderfully intense and refreshing result.' Chris Girdler - Beat magazine 'Bellplay is brightly mixed and Keith Mason's keening slices of feedback and warping shimmers ease in and out of songs with an engaging unpredictability. The sad and propulsive chording is the musical highlight in its marriage to the vocal meters. Their pale distance allows the bass to meander and chime while the drums beat mournful tattoos.' Andy Hazel - Inpress magazine ‘..this is a staggering listen, offering some of the mighty undertow of Beaches while most often ploughing its own erratic path. And wouldn’t you know it: Bellplay is the kind of 43-minute album that begs immediate repeating.’ Doug Wallen - Mess & Noise ‘Total "classic" vibe on this track from White Woods' new album: got a real Kinks-y melody that coasts lethargically over some shambolic garage psyche and sort of spirals into this rustic nirvana that's just so easy to listen to. Never feels "safe", though - there's this kinda seething discontent that runs through the track courtesy of subtly discordant guitars and organ and provides a mood of gentle dread. BTW, this album rules. Best of 2010?!’ Rose Quartz blog spot White Woods formed in Melbourne in 2008, all having relocated to the Garden State from Hobart in Tasmania. Ever since, White Woods have impressed with raw, droning live shows, showcasing their noisy pop and angular guitars in both Australia and New Zealand, alongside the likes of MUM SMOKES, Fabulous Diamonds, The Ancients, The Twerps and Panoptique Electrical. Their debut album ‘Bellplay’ solidifies the raw integrity of White Woods; recorded to 1/4" tape, the tracks seethe with the intensity of bands like Wire and Gang Of Four, as well as the sublime pop charms of The Moles, The Clean and The Straightjacket Fits. Vocalists Patrick Breen and Kelly Brown often appear buried by glacial chords and white noise, but somehow the deft rhythms of White Woods permeate throughout. Mixed by James Tulczyn and mastered by Casey Rice (The Dirty Three, MUM SMOKES, The Tigers, The Ancients..), 'Bellplay' is a visceral collection of rustic yet atonal pop songs.

FAUX PAS- 'Noiseworks'(SRP073)
Faux Pas’ anxiously awaited ‘Noiseworks’ album is out now, available, in the public domain. ‘Noiseworks’, the second full-length album from Faux Pas, is a bold vision of 21st century synth-pop lovingly crafted by one man, Melbourne's Tim Shiel. In the four years since his 2006 debut record ‘Entropy begins at home’ – a self-released pastiche of exotica samples that drew critical acclaim and community radio support – Faux Pas has been far from dormant. There have been three EPs, each containing a lead track well supported by community radio and Triple J alike: Changes in 2007, Chasing Waterfalls in 2008, and Silver Line in December 2009. There have also been remixes for Pikelet, Gotye, Paul Dempsey and many more; plus appearances on compilations for institutions as varied as literary journal The Lifted Brow, respected US label Ghostly International, and Ministry Of Sound. All of which leads to ‘Noiseworks,’ which was pieced together by Tim in his home studio throughout 2009, and then mixed with the assistance of Melbourne producer Franc Tetaz, well-known for his work with Architecture in Helsinki, Sally Seltmann and Lior. From the tropical future-funk of Guillotine to the ethereal dream-beat of Vanderbilt, ‘Noiseworks’ is a joyous explosion of digital psychedelia. At times subtle – such as the meditative piano interval Minimums - and at other times, completely shameless – such as the hyper-detailed electro jams Megasports and Dawson Mode – ‘Noiseworks’ is expansive and inventive. The singles Chasing Waterfalls and Silver Line benefit from generous re-workings - the latter, a hypnotic suite that borrows sounds from Melbourne band The Orbweavers, is a revelation at almost double the length of its radio edit. And while the record is grand in its technique and architecture, an intensity of emotion is never far from the surface. Evocative and relentlessly detailed, ‘Noiseworks’ is a definitive mission statement of sound that affirms its creator as a true musical iconoclast. It’s a cliché - but on this record, Faux Pas finally arrives. ‘Noiseworks’ is a joint release between Sensory Projects/Inertia and Heroics, distributed by Inertia.
Faux Pas

RAT VS POSSUM- 'Daughter of Sunshine'(SRP071)
'Daughter of Sunshine' documents and celebrates the first year of music-making from Rat Vs Possum. Since their inception, Rat Vs Possum have gone from front-room jamming to a bursting field of rollicking electrical energy within a very short period of time. The foursome of Daphne Shum, Kieran O’Shea, Matt Kulesza, Andrew Noble and (recent addition) Adrian Tregonning began experimenting together back in 2008. Early jams, described by friends of Rat Vs Possum as "terrible", eventually led to the formation of songs, and these songs evolved into invigorating the psychedelic and faux-tribal pop tunes which have become the basis for their (infamously awesome) live set. These tracks are now unfathomable beasts fuelled by Op-shop Casio keyboards, a five piece drum ensemble, guitars, lyrical workouts, and bounding rhythms which veer towards dance-floor on occasion. The vibrancy of Rat Vs Possum transcends their being 'just another pop group'. They celebrate music, life, and a good time.
Rat Vs Possum

LOVE CONNECTION- 'Love Connection'(SRP069)
Formed in April 2009, Love Connection are Dean Noble, Kobi Simpson, Michael Caterer and Nathan Burgess. Within 6 months of forming, their debut album was written, recorded, mixed and mastered: an incredible feat considering the subtle complexities of these tracks, which, when listened to through headphones offers a fuller spectral experience of hidden nuances, intricate frameworks, and multi-tracked instruments and vocals. Mixed by Nick Huggins(Kid Sam, Two Bright Lakes), mastered by Tim Sigmund, and with incredible artwork by Cailan Burns(Qua, Mountains in the sky, Pretty Boy Crossover), Love Connection describe their self-titled debut album as "a collection of low-fi, synth-based electronica, dabbling in new wave and psychedelic sensibilities with a strong pop influence". The trio give birth to an amalgamation of vintage keyboards, Korgs and Casiotones, throttling with sparse progressive guitar lines and percussive drum solos, described as “being heard through an old pair of headphones that feed rainbow-sounding grit into your ears” and “epic pop tunes that feel like a waterfall made of warm, multi-coloured soup rushing over your entire body.” We won't argue.
Love Connection

PANOPTIQUE ELECTRICAL- 'Yes To Fear, Yes To Desire'(SRP062)
'Yes To Fear, Yes To Desire' is the second album from Panoptique Electrical AKA Jason Sweeney (Pretty Boy Crossover, Mist & Sea). It follows on from 2008's Let The Darkness At You, an album which garnered significant critical praise and has become one of Sensory Projects' best selling releases outside of Australia. Yes To Fear, Yes To Desire finds Sweeney subtly playing with pianos and expanding notes, twisting and maintaining melodies, and reaching sub-levels through resonance and arranged movements in sound. The resulting 14 tracks are spellbinding listening. Perfect for fans of Stars of the Lid, Eluvium, and Brian Eno.
Panoptique Electrical

MUM SMOKES- 'Easy / House Music'(SRP060)
Formed by Jonathan Michell (The Ancients) in 2003, MUM SMOKES were originally a three-piece. Now the band comprises of four songwriters; Michell, Karl Scullin (KES Band), Julian Patterson (Minimum Chips) and - member since 2006 - Justin Fuller (ZOND). Easy / House Music is the second release from MUM SMOKES. Easy / House Music follows on from the band's 2005 debut, Railroads, Chasms and Fantasies. Easy and House Music are two albums made available as one release; the package comprising 31 tracks, the 2 discs nestled in a lovely recycled card wallet with artwork for both albums by Mark Rodda and 2 fold-out posters including full track details. Easy and House Music were recorded at home in Melbourne by MUM SMOKES and mastered by Casey Rice(Tortoise, Dirty Three, Pan.American et al.). Easy was recorded between January 2006 and March 2007, and House Music was recorded between August 2007 and September 2008. The albums are considered by MUM SMOKES to be separate albums coming from distinct periods and distinct recording sessions.

Mum Smokes

Five years on from their hugely acclaimed second album ‘Wear The Weight Of The Resting Sky’, ‘Playtime for John Mountain’ is The Rectifiers' most ambitious and accomplished work to date and signals the return of one of Melbourne's most singular and ahead-of-the-curve bands, emboldened with a beatific new musical and lyrical vision.
***** JASON WALKER - MAG
“Brilliant, inventive & timeless soul stirring pop!” - NORMAN RECORDS(UK)
“With the eclectic pop sensibility of The Flaming Lips and the sun-drenched harmonies of The Beach Boys, the third album from this Melbourne band is a gem.” Alex Fregon - MX

PANOPTIQUE ELECTRICAL - Let the darkness at you (SRP057)
Panoptique Electrical is Jason Sweeney, best known for his work as part of Pretty Boy Crossover.
‘Let the darkness at you’ collects instrumental pieces recorded by Sweeney for film, animated film, and theatre performances, in various towns and cities between 1998 and 2008; Sweeney capturing a shimmering introspection through the manipulation of pianos, and computers.
‘Let the darkness at you’ is perfect for fans of Eluvium, Stars Of The Lid, Brian Eno, and Fennesz.

‘This is experiential music, tightly crafted, gentle, warm and beautiful. It's experimental ambient music, the kind of music that elevates the listener and changes everything for the better.’ BOB BAKER FISH – INPRESS
Panoptique Electrical

‘TINGLING CHEEKS ARE LOVE’ -a Sensory Projects compilation- (SRP055)
This double CD label compilation features 33 tracks over two discs, some previously released thru Sensory Projects, others unreleased and exclusive to ‘Tingling Cheeks Are Love’.

CANON BLUE – Colonies (SRP051)
Canon Blue AKA Daniel James, wrote, recorded, and played almost every instrument on his debut album, Colonies. Colonies is a record that defies its ‘bedroom artist’ origins; covering a range of emotions with its wonderfully textured, sizzling, and gritty electro art-rock.
Mixed by Chris Taylor(Grizzly Bear) and mastered by Cristian Vogel, Colonies staunchly refuses to be pinpointed.
****The Australia/New Zealand release of Canon Blue’s Colonies comes complete with 4 brand additional tracks lifted off Canon Blue’s previously download-only Halcyon EP.
Canon Blue

THE SAND PEBBLES - Ceduna (SRP053)
For their fourth album, The Sand Pebbles shook off the modern world and went to a place where the desert meets the sea. They spent two weeks away from civilization, their provisions being rather minimal; a little food, water, and some psychedelics, and with this in hand they explored the terrain in a town called Ceduna.
‘Dripping with summer haze and '60's psychedelia... It's great stuff, warm and floaty and one of those records you chuck on and kick back to..’-ZAN ROWE, TRIPLE J (CATCH OF THE DAY)
‘A gloriously woozy dreamscape of transportive psychedelia’-BERNARD ZUEL, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
