    ♥ Sequoia Humane's Interests
GeneralSee our current list of adoptable animals on our web site: www.sequoiahumane.org
Thank you for considering the adoption of a pet from the Sequoia Humane Society. Our adoption process is designed to help insure a good match, for you and for the animal…A match that will be a happy one for many years to come.

STEPS IN THE ADOPTION PROCESS

First, we ask you to review our Adoption Policies and Shelter Standards. If they are all acceptable to you, you're ready to proceed to the next step.

If you like, you may walk through our facility and view (but not yet handle) the kittens, cats, puppies, dogs and other animals that are available for adoption OR you may proceed to the next step in the adoption process, filling out an adoption application.

Fill out an Adoption Application (we'll be glad to help you fill it out). Your answers to the questions on the application serve as the basis for us to help you choose a pet that is compatible with you and your family. You may receive an application at the Shelter or Download an Adoption Application. We are not equipped to receive applications via e-mail, so please remember to bring it with you when you visit the Shelter.

We invite you to walk through our facility and visit with our candidates for adoption. One at a time, take your favorites to a visiting room or yard and spend all the time you want getting to know them. We'll tell you what we know about each animal's personality and temperament and how that may or may not seem to fit your situation. We'll also answer your questions about how to care for or train the animal.
PLEASE NOTE: You don't have to complete this entire process in one day. In fact, we encourage you to take some time to reflect upon your decision. DON'T WORRY, we will hold an animal for you for up to 24 hours.

In fact, before making a final decision on the animal you want to adopt, we will urge you to bring other members of your family - including other animal members - to meet him or her. This can prevent you from being disappointed later if others in your family don't share your enthusiasm for the animal you've chosen.

Once you have selected your new friend, and verified the information on your adoption application, you will be asked to sign an adoption contract and pay an adoption fee. The fee covers spaying or neutering, vaccines your new pet has received at the shelter, and other items you will receive with your new family member.
That's it! We hope that by the end of this process there will be at least two very happy clients: you and your new animal friend.

We reserve the right not to adopt an animal into a situation that we believe would be dangerous (for the person or the animal), impermanent, or unhealthy.
MusicVOLUNTEER!!!

Have you been thinking of volunteering at the Sequoia Humane Society but just haven't had the time to attend a volunteer orientation? Well, now's your chance! The Sequoia Humane Society invites you to join us the first Saturday of every month from 10 am to 11 am at our Pet Adoption Center to find out more about the fun volunteer activities available at the Sequoia Humane Society Shelter and Tailwaggers Thrift Shop. Cheri comes to us from the Sacramento area, where she worked as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Yolo County SPCA for 2 years. She recently moved to Humboldt County with her boyfriend and their three cats, Orion, Jolie, and Aedan.

The Sequoia Humane Society is a 501(c) 3 non-profit, completely supported by tax-deductible donations and grants. Last year we helped over 650 animals find homes, while reducing unwanted litters through our low-cost spay/neuter program. But we couldn't do this life-saving work without the selfless efforts of our dedicated volunteers. Since we've become a no-kill shelter the animals that enter our facility don't leave until their perfect companion comes to bring them home. For many, that means weeks or months in a dog kennel or cat condo - a very different environment than the house and family they grew up with. The Sequoia Humane Society Staff works tirelessly to make the lives of these animals as comfortable as possible while they are in our care - you can help! Just a few hours a month can make a world of difference for a dog that craves long walks on the beach, or a cat who just wants to be pet and brushed.

"If I'd known there was a place I could go to pet cats when I first moved to Humboldt County, I'd have been down here every day!" says Cynthia MacMillan, Executive Director of the Sequoia Humane Society. "This is the perfect volunteer opportunity for people who love animals."

From walking dogs to brushing cats to helping with offsite adoption events, or sorting clothes at Tailwaggers Thrift Shop - there are many ways you can participate!

For more information about volunteering, or to sign up for the next volunteer orientation, contact Cheri at 442-1782, or via e-mail at volunteer@sequoiahumane.org. Thanks!

You can also download a volunteer application in Word or PDF format on our web site.

News from Tailwaggers
by Elly, Customer Service Manager

The volunteers have been doing a wonderful job with the shop since the very beginning. Without the volunteers and their dedication to the Sequoia Humane Society the shop would not be in as good of shape as it is. All of the volunteers have exhibited great customer service skills. I am confident that the shop will continue to improve over the rest of the year. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering at Tailwaggers, or you have a piece of furniture or other items to donate, please contact us! We are located at 2904 F Street in Henderson Center; our phone number is 445-5837. Hours are Monday through Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturdays 10am to 2pm. Volunteer shifts are available throughout the week and on Saturdays. Donations are always accepted.

About me:
"Hi, my name is Cheri and I am the Volunteer Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, and Photographer for the Sequoia Humane Society. I built this site for the adoptable animals to receive more exposure for adoption, for SHS Volunteers (periodically I sent out 'friend requests' to those who are volunteering with us, and the site has general information about SHS and events. I do not allow spammers or advertisers. Mainly this site is for SHS, Humboldt County folks, or animal-lovers. Thank you and enjoy!"

I just have to say how HAPPY I am that both Mocha and Sydney have found good homes.
They lived at Sequoia Humane for a long time. So I'm really excited that they are living their lives with their own "humans" now!
