Called “the smartest, most creative and consistently excellent classical music ticket in South Florida,” by the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Seraphic Fire has firmly established itself as one of the area’s major cultural institutions. Seraphic Fire’s commitment to artistic daring has garnered critical acclaim for the group, and their promotion of young professional musicians has made them a local favorite.
For three years SF has been named in local listings of “Top 10 Musical Events of the Year”, and has been featured in national publications such as Ocean Drive Magazine, Early Music, and The Voice. International classical music magazine Gramophone called Seraphic Fire “One of the most exciting and unexpected developments on the local scene . . . chamber choir Seraphic Fire . . . has quickly become one of the top attractions in the region. No group programmes more adventurously,” In November of 2005, SF was invited to perform with the New World Symphony on a concert of Bach and Vivaldi, and now serves as the choral ensemble for the symphony whenever it programs choral works. SF has commissioned and premiered works by young, up-and-coming composers including Matthew Barnson, and local composers Sydney Guillaume and Alvaro Bermudez. In 2005, SF commissioned a 50-minute work from 28 year-old composer Shawn Crouch, The Road from Hiroshima: A Requiem, which was subsequently nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. In an exciting cross-over collaboration in 2004, SF recorded with international pop-star Shakira on a track which appeared on the album Oral Fixation II, which ultimately went Platinum.
In 2006 SF received the ASCAP/Chorus America/Alice Parker award for adventurous programming. The ensemble has released three CD recordings to date: Beginnings (2005), a mix of all a cappella works from its fourth season, Bach’s Six Motets (2006), performed with one voice on a part, and a live-in-concert recording of Handel’s Messiah (2007). In September of 2007, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation awarded a $250,000 grant to Seraphic Fire, for the formation of a new professional chamber orchestra. In April of 2008, SF will make its Northeastern United States debut, with tour concerts in New York, NY; New Haven, CT; and Syracuse, NY.
