Situationists from Paris came to the forest of the Olympic Peninsula after the furor of May '68, to hide out, study, pontificate, make babies, go fishing, become real in the rich poverty of that place.
We are the grandchild of May 68: Serendipity Musik, the music of random chance mixed with the soul of nature.
We love the Slits and múm but we sound nothing like them. We are a concoction of Gypsies and thieves who steal only from the rich, and give to the poor. We are the sound of the trees and the wind come to life. We live with the rich poverty of the underground. We are the sound of the silent ecstacy of the universe you can only hear while in tune. We are simultaneously seductive and offensive to the bourgeoisie. We are the sound of the Ghost Dance risen once again. We are the sound of the sidewalk in the city, pounded by many walking feet of people and buffalo and the gentle patter of rain. We are the collected sounds of many parallel universes come into one womb.
We have no tomorrow or yesterday, we go only sideways...
Words might be pretentious but the music is real and it goes out into space forever, whether you will catch it in your ear... ?
Serendipity Musik is the umbrella which protects Serena's records from the rain and also is the vase which holds her song-flowers...
This page features the music of Serena Tideman.
In addition to being a solo performer and composer, Serena has worked as a touring cellist with Amy Denio, Eyvind Kang, múm and Rasputina. She is mostly a composer and a cellist but is also many other things including a filmmaker, painter, and a poet. (She is also a mother.)
She studied cello with a Russian master, but for the most part was self-taught.
She was born in Forks, WA and grew up in the Hoh rainforest between Forks and LaPush. She moved to Seattle at the age of seven and began her cello studies shortly thereafter. (She first saw a cello at her grandparents' house, but was forbidden to touch it... so she begged to learn how to play.)
She has played on both coasts of America, in HongKong, France, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Iceland, London, Sweden, and Norway and has made many friends in Japan. She wishes next to play in Canada, Australia, Patagonia, India, Africa and Russia, and perhaps S.America.
She also plays the piano, guitar, harp, melodica and sings sometimes, and currently resides in a sea-side town in the countryside.
Here is some beautiful music for you. It is from the German film series Die Zweite Heimat, or The Second Home. It portrays bohemians in Munich in the 1960s, playing music, performing random acts of art, getting political, and existing in their collective second home - which is constructed of their friends, experiences, and their art and music. There is even a character named Clarissa who plays beautiful cello. She reminds me of you a tiny bit. I hope you enjoy this clip of the character Juan Ramon Subercaseaux playing percussion and marimba. If you haven't heard of this film, I highly recommend it to you dear friend. It is has an avant garde score, with hours of thrilling music actually played by the actors themselves. What talent!
