During the late nineties the music scene in the Maldives had just changed onto pop and alternative rock and Grunge. The few remaining bands in the metal scene seem to follow a darker side of music. Heavy metal or thrash metal was being subtly pushed aside.
Serenity Dies was one of the few “underground” thrash metal bands to bring metal back into the music scene. Heavy riffs with solid lead playing and lyrics that seem to identify with a lot of the misfits of the pop era.
Chippe’ as a self taught guitarist influenced heavily by bands likes Megadeth, Metallica, Arch Enemy, Testament, Pantera...etc and other Metal bands; started to teach what he knew to youngsters. Apart from being a member of the thrash metal band Leviathan, chippe also had a dream of having his own line up and performing Original material bringing about his own music to the thrash metal into the scene. Two of his potential and most talented students Fai and Chuck, were called to bring this dream to life. A choice that would change their lives forever for this was the beginning of Serenity Dies.
Serenity Dies at the beginning badly needed a drummer. After endless auditions, the reality of lack of drummers faced them. With no luck for sometime they decided Fai to take on the drums because he knew a little bit of drumming at the time. As Fai took on the drums and left an empty guitarist position which was filled by Beybe of Locura [another Thrash metal band popular at the time].Chuck took on bass guitar and vocals. Serenity Dies was now ready for their first live gig.
Serenity Dies played their first gig at the City Billiards Club [a local social hangout] in 2004.The band won over an adequate number of fans from their first live performance. Thrash Metal was back on the popular criteria once again. Playing tribute to Megadeth, Metallica, Testament, Pantera...etc, And other band favorites they broke barriers that night.
In 2005 Serenity Dies played their second live show at the Exposure 2 concert. They performed and left the head bangers and metal lovers begging for more, Serenity Dies had become one of the most leading and in demand bands of the time.
The talented young guitarist Beybe unfortunately had to leave the band due to personal issues right after the Exposure performance. Another blow to the band, that had to be dealt with as soon as possible; To finish their first album and to keep playing live gigs they needed a new guitarist.
This time they didn’t have to look far. Chuck’s younger brother Xiao came at the right moment and was hired though young and inexperienced at the time. Xiao did not take long to prove that this was a right choice.
The work on their first album Murder was now at a stage of needing financial assistance to launch. After approaching a lot of people it was Mr.Habib [Benhaa Habeeb] owner of a prominent music instrument shop [Island Music] and music enthusiast, who gave them the golden ticket that helped launch Murder.
Murder was launched in one the biggest musical events of 2006, The Rock Storm. Performing along side great bands such as Fasy Live and the Sri Lankan metal band Stigmata which made the show reach the grand scale that it did.
Murder, even till today, stands as the first and only, Thrash Metal album produced and released by a Maldivian band. Serenity Dies is now working on their second album hopefully to be released sometime in 2008.
