What is 'Can't Stop The Serenity'?
Can't Stop The Serenity is a worldwide charity event that is organised by 'Browncoats', fans of Firefly/Serenity.
The charity event consists of a screening of 'Serenity', Joss Whedon's first feature film based on the TV series 'Firefly'.
All the money raised for the charity screenings that takes place all over the world, including USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, goes towards Equality Now, a charity that Joss Whedon supports.
Why Equality Now?
In 1992, Jessica Neuwirth founded Equality Now along with Navanethem Pillay and Feryal Gharahi, to address the gender disparity in the human rights movement, which had grown to dismiss violations as “cultural” or “private”. Issues such as domestic violence, rape, female genital mutilation, trafficking, and reproductive rights were not part of the agendas of established human rights organizations.
Neuwirth was a student of Lee Stearns, who founded the first Amnesty International chapter run exclusively by high school students. Stearns is Joss Whedon's mother.
Whedon has been outspoken in his support of the organization and gender equality initiatives. You can hear his remarks on why equality is paramount in this YouTube clip - http://youtube.com/watch?v=cYaczoJMRhs, where he accepts a special recognition award from Equality Now.
In picking Equality Now as the organization receiving the proceeds of the global screenings, the organizers of Can't Stop The Serenity voice their support of the work done around the world by EN.
Why 'Serenity'?
While the film did not perform to expectations at the box office, the movie 'Serenity' has a strong and vocal group of fans around the world -- most of whom did not get a chance to see it in first-run theatres. The Can't Stop The Serenity events give those fans a chance to see the "Big Damn Movie" on the big screen one more time (or for the first time) for a worthwhile cause.
