| About Sergio & Willingham |
|
Sergio Balustrada and Willingham Highchamber met in Los Angeles in 2003 while Balustrada was finishing his apprenticeship with Italian-Chicano sculptor Victor Carpacelli. A few songs were written, a few shows were played, but trouble with the INS and visa issues sent Sergio packing back to Buenos Aires and nightly gigs with the tango-mariachi band "Vatos de la Sierra" at Taco del Mar, (no, not the U.S.A. fast-food chain, but rather an upscale Mexican Bistro in the Palermo Hollywood district of Buenos Aires).
Highchamber returned to Bristol, England where he completed his Master's and began his PhD research in Comparative Literature, concentrating on writers of the post-colonial diaspora, much to chagrin of his aristocratic family, who had wanted him to become a barrister. Naturally, he became immersed in the post-dub scene, with regular DJ spots at Black Lane Club and Lurk. Switching gears, he toured briefly as a solo acoustic act which did not have a name and might have had a profound influence on the neo-folk scene, had the project not been so understated.
Fast-forward to 2007; the two meet again while both are called onstage by friends El Lake Effect at a show in Chicago. The fruitful reunion produces an outpouring of new material; fueled by a nine-foot stack of organic tortillas, Sergio & Willingham spend a week at El Lake Effect's home studios on the shores of Lake Michigan. Many El Lake Effect members collaborate, and the upcoming album, "14 songs About Tortillas" features performances and songwriting of Nicholas Gumby, El Lake Effect side projects Caro Syrup, Nemesis Jeff, and the New Orly Reconstruction, with a special appearance by the Space Monkey.
