About Sergio
Earlier this summer, New York's WPLJ-FM started playing a catchy tune called "Bears," by a newcomer named Sergio. The song fared so well with the station's listeners, that they invited Sergio to come and perform live in the studio. Sergio was a hit even before he dropped the bomb on the many Jews (and Gentiles) who listen to WPLJ. Not only is Sergio Jewish, he was born and raised in Israel.
Growing up outside Tel Aviv, Sergio achieved a certain degree of fame as a teenage model in his native land, his face adorning many an Israeli bus stop. His musical idols were Elvis and Freddie Mercury and he dreamed of having his songs played on international radio. If you're thinking that Sergio is just another pretty boy playing bubblegum pop, think again (and that's not to say that there would be anything wrong with that in the first place)! His songs are statements and messages reflecting his views of the world as well as personal interests.
"Bears" was written after seeing a program on The Discovery Channel about the resilience and determination of the animals. "Who Loves a Baby" is an ode to the many unwanted newborns who are selfishly abandoned by their parents each year. The title "Don't Drink and Drive" speaks for itself. Musically, Sergio's style offers something for everyone from funk to ballads to straight away rock. WPLJ's morning DJ Scott Shannon recently compared him to Bob Dylan.
Music aside, Sergio's faith and values are almost enough to make him a wonderful role model for today's Jewish youth. "If God gives you money, it's so you can use it to do something meaningful," he claims. And while Sergio admires many of the same musicians, actors and athletes as the rest of the world, he believes the true heroes are those that volunteer their time to worthy causes.
Over the past couple of years we've had opportunities to root for Jewish athletes and cheer for high-level Jewish politicians. But it's been awhile since we've had a real Jewish hero in the music scene (or at least one who didn't have the last name Dylan). Sergio just might end up filling that void. Not only does he have the musical talent, but he also has the presence, intellect, values and charisma to go with it. I encourage everyone to check out his debut effort "Electric Rain," (available at Borders Book and Music Stores and at www.jerusalemmusic.com) and see what New Yorkers of all races and creeds are buzzing about.
By any chance were you recently in Bratislava, Slovakia? I was vacationing and though I saw you..I ran and ran but the figure disappeared into the darkness.
Could you post "Heaven" or "Friends" on your play list. Those are two great ballads that all the fans need to hear. Plans for a new album anytime soon?
Thanbk you for making me one of your top friends. My mama does want me alive so i won;t drink and drive and i won;t mess with bears because they are hungry and they never give up. Neither will I.
